MQ+GQ = ???

Post by V8Patrol »

The old brain matter has been having a work out of late and I thought why not give it to the OL crew .....

Seeing no-one can get a coil/linked suspension engineered on an MQ ..... or any other leaf suspensioned model for that matter.....could I get a GQ chassis and drop a MQ body onto it ??

I have a spare complete MQ ......, there's a GQ rolling chassis ( ute )minus engine sitting under a tarp that I could get for around the $1500 mark ( still negotiating with the owner).

The differances in lineing up between the two bits are there but certainly not imposiable to overcome..... mostly it will be body work involved in the conversion ....have welder will travel :D

Vicroads dont have a problem with a new chassis number ....

Of The 2 engineers I spoke to one said .....
"Errr Ummm Yeah .... cant see any problems but it hasnt been done before that i'm aware of.... might need to check it out first "
the other said
"I dont think they dont have any specific regulations for that sort of thing that I know of .....yet !! ..... I'll call ya back if there is any." .... 3 weeks later & he hasnt as yet rung back !!!

My ultamate goal should this get off the ground is as follows...

MQ body with stretched rear 1/4s and cuts as required for lineing up with the GQ chassis, and converted to a ute body ( no canopy)
V8 conversion ... SB chev or Hemi, ( 327 or 318 CI ) and on sole LPG.
Body lift, about 2" & suspension lift around the 6" mark
Wheels and tyres .... Probably a set of 34" on beadlocked sunny rims (claws, swampers, simex, etc style rubber) for offroad use + a "street set"
High mount winch ( been trying to get this off of the father inlaw for a while now )
Roll cage and sliders etc etc etc

and then getting it registered :finger:

Any-one know of this type of work being carried out before ???

if anyone could do it kingy it would be you mate.

sounds like a fair bit of work. and with most mods there will be problems, but you'll get around them. its not impossible.

Yeh....?

Is this just a nissan thing???

I know of a few Series Land Rovers that are legally engineered with coils...
Bill, AKA 'Daddylonglegs' has his car engineered and would know of much more cars than i as he does the conversions??

Anyway, Goodluck

WHat are the reasons for not being able to engineera MQ with coils?

Lockee had a series landie on a range rover chassi and I know of people with coil multi link susp under leaf vehicle. Gregs FJ55 with coil (guts knows him), seen a coil susp 75series in the Navnite.

So either plan is doable.

You can engineer an MQ/K with coils. My mates LWB MQ is in at Cheezy's at the moment getting coils and GQ diffs front and rear and it is going to be fully engineered.

pete and mick christie have done the MQ body onto GQ chassis a couple times, registered and all.
i can't see why you couldn't get a coil sprung MQ legal anyway?

seems like a simple body swap and engine swap, perhaps you are talking to the wrong engineers.

Converting MQ to coils is Engineerable easily enough if done right, when using GQ diffs.
Converting MQ diffs and MQ chassis to coils probably can get engineered but there are alot of very fine lines to tread......

All of the engineers i have spoken to about this have been very....." uuum yeh maybe u could do it but i dont like the sound of it "
They beleive than MQ chassis was designed for Leave sprung suspension and to change it is greatly changing manufacturers tolerances.
You CAN do it, and do it right its just that most engineers dont want to touch it.

I dont know an engineer up here that will engineeer it. If i did i would convert to rear Coils tomorrow. Im having enough trouble getting an SOA engineered

i would love a coil rear end

from my experience engineers are a bunch of wankers. i tried to get my chopped gq extra cab engineered, spent ages looking for an engineer, he inspected it in three stages then dissappeared, messed me around with truck modification codes, pages of stuff like how appropriate plywood was for body blocks on trucks - what that had to do with me i don't know.

thought stuff it went to the local mod plate servo and got a code there for $130. no nonsence, while i waited. thats how it should be. they want your money you want a code $bling$ blue plate on. just get a diff swap code.

i've got a gq complete rear if ya need one

cheers
