Urgent CJ5 Guru's

Post by Singo17 »

Need some low down looking at a CJ5 for a mate.

It has detroits front and rear,

35' BFG's blah blah

Most importantly it has a 2.7L TD out of a Mitsubishi (I assume starwagon) mated to a 4 speed tranny which the bloke says is stock.

What do you guys think or summise on this conversion. It is complianced and regoed in WA.

Any other shyt I should be looking at body mounts, springs, rust etc etc

Check the chassis carefully for cracks...especially arond the spring mounts, engine mounts, steering box and body mounts....
35"s are a big tyre for a cj5....Cutting isn't as popular as it should be - so it's possible that it has a big body lift - if this is the case, tell yer mate to ripp it out and cut instead and use TJ flares......
Also although the diesel donk probably isn't the most powerful thing out there, 35's could be pushing the limits of the front diff especially since it's locked.....unless they've upgrades the front diff....

I've not heard of a Mitsubishi 2.7 td; Pajero went from 2.5 to 2.8, and I thought the L300/Starwagon/Delica did the same.

At the very least, identify the model of the engine to check availability of spares. If the engine came from an imported half-cut it might be an orphan in Oz.

Had a look it is a 2.5TD. The kid selling it has no idea what is in it, on it. It has a 33' BFG's not 35's as advertised. It has a Detroit rear as I could feel that sucker when driving it.

The front diff is enclosed CV type (help us out here) and has had the front Diff moved forward approx 2-3 inches.

It has dodgy shock mounts on the front and the shocks slope [ / ]towards the front of the truck.

The front shackles are custom booty fab (no pics sorry) and have about 30 washers all up packing the gap between the plates and the bushes which look farked.

The tyres rub bad on the booty shock mounts both sides full lock.

Motor well it does poke along pretty good. It doesn't blow smoke but the Turbo can't be heard much and when I did hear it didn't sound too flash. I am not familiar with the donk so I don't really know if the turbo was knackered.

It has a Filter Pod that needs a real good clean which would help too.

The chassis (fark they are light wieght never had a real good look before) looks okay could not see any cracks.

The body rear has been treated with that black non slip lookin shyt in the rear but the bodgy bog up sites can still be seen.

It has an awesome looking Stainless Steel exhaust system which looks more at home on a Spoon Civic.

I told my mate lets not just go there. He likes it though but I see too much money to make it safe.

IMHO best left alone.....
The front diff is either a Dana25 or Dana27, either is getting rare for spares....
As for the donk it's bit of an odd ball too....
The rest sounds a bit dodgy.....Offer the bloke $500 or walk away ;)

Now where's Paz he's have a lot more info on one of these....

I shoulda taken a photo of it. Now you are mentioning it I did not find any Jeep badging but I thought that was because someone had customised it to suit themselves.

For info this one has a Jeep style front grill but the diamond emblem in the top of it. I assumed it was a mod by the former owner because it is actually all crome the grill that is .

Nup that would be a Mitsubishi made Jeep, they were made in Thailand (I think), they are fairly rare in Aus but not worth really anymore here.

Really it comes down to how well it's been done and by the sounds of it not well at all.

There is a nice CJ7 on e-bay at the moment on 35's that is also worth loking at.

Thanks guys the problem is solved it is a Mitsubishi

http://www.ebroadcast.com.au/ecars/Mitsubishi/Jeep.html

CJ-3B rip off. Lucky I got you blokes around, I know fark all about old Jeeps (new for that matter cept what they look like).

Funny thing is the dude selling it thinks it is a CJ5 and he thinks that someone else put in the motor. He thought he had 35in tyres on it. He is selling it because he has lost his driving ticket for two years, I think this guy dwells in the bottom ten percent of the gene pool.

Well this has saved me heaps of drama.

Thanks alot.
