FJ40 Soft brake line replacements and bitchen
My soft brake lines are shiet. But you know whats even shittier. Is stopping by a brake shop to get an idea of what it will cost to have them make up the hoses because they are trying to convince you that no one stocks or sells them any more for your old shorty fj40.
Those assholes wanted to pop me about 80 bucks a hose. 30 bucks on the fluid they would use to bleed the brakes. And another 100 or so for labour. But not only that they tried to tell me that there is a "special way" to bleed the old cruisers. I'm standing there thinking....special way my ass....whats that?... pump the pedal and use a brake bleed kit?
I think their goal was to scare me off from doing it myself as I let it be known that I had no previous brake servicing expirence. Commie capitalists bastards. After all was said and done I walked away with a useless 400 ++ dollar quote.
So heres a question. Where do you guys with your oldish 40s get your soft brake lines? Does toyota carry them? Rape-co?
Or does anyone know of a place thats reasonable in brisy?
Mines a 73 ..does anyone know up to what year the brakes lines might have been similar that way when these guys look up the parts in their books they cant tell me that their part listings only go back to 1975?

go to any other brake place and have the hoses made, i just had them made for my hilux and 2 steel hoses for the rear diff, a rear rubber hose 110cm in lenght and 2 fronts 80cm in lenght cost me $107.
As for bleeding, there is a special way to do it. of memory you start at the furtherest poing from the booster and work your way back. could be the other way i cant remember.

As for bleeding your brake system, there is no trick.. its just time consuming...bloody wheel cylinder adjustment takes forever to get just right..
this is a good desription... and this guy has been doing them a while..

Yeah I have read about bleeding from the furthest away brake first. Thanks for reminding me. I've got a personal collection of posts and info off site pertaining speciffically to bleeding the old 40's. I just knew the guy was blowing smoke up my arse.
The Don Kayatt place is just what I was looking for. They even have a brisbane branch!
Always greatful for the wealth of knowledge you guys openly share with dimwitted newbs like me.
Gracias,

HI Capt... im the guy that brought the bullbar from you. i have just done all my brakes and its fun (not). if you need a hand i am still local and i have the speical tool for adjusting the wheel cylinders. a screwdriver is a pain, the proper tool is exy but worth using.
PM me if you would like a hand
