LT77 Issue

Post by stephen »

the LT77 in my tdi disco every now and again, I cannot get any gear after trying to change down, Happened to my wife yesterday and now she wants it fixed , or a new. The box is perfect besides this problem done 200,000k's syncro's are perfect and box tight exept for this happening, once you find a gear it is fine again (slow right down). Clutch is about gone but I didn't think it was related to the clutch. Any diagnosis attemp appreciated.

Is it worse when cold? If so try changing to a different oil - the LT77s where a bit finicky.

If you're running ATF go back to the LR spec gearbox oil, or vica versa. ATF was better in mine.

Running ATF in it, it is not when cold box is fine when cold, there is no real condition when it does it and maybe only once a month or 2 but you nearly need to stop to find a gear again, yesterday my wife got off the M4 and it did it about 5 minutes after that at a roundabout and she had to stop in the roundabout and could only get reverse. she has been driving it for 2 years so is familiar with the box. I thought it may be a bush or something simple, or at least that is what I was hoping.

Inside the LT77, there is only 1 shaft that is pushed/pulled/rotated to select all forward and reverse gears - wouldn't think it is a worn bush there.

I've never pulled apart, the assembly with the gear lever that bolts on top, but I have adjusted the springs and that improved gear selection on mine (but I suspect you have some other problem).

Can you be more specific in describing what is/not happening.

The only other thing that happened to mine that might be relevant is that theres a bolt somewhere in the top cover/linkages that works loose.

I drove from the Vic coast back to Sydney with 4th hi and 4th low only - roundabouts were interesting!
