any comments on welded rear diffs - FJ40

Post by Mechman »

Hi guys...
got me a spare diff.. and have almost been perswaded (by bj on roids) to weld one of them up. if i do this it will be left in the truck for a while coz i cant see me swapping it over very much (old style axles).

i would be interested in any stories, comments, warnings or praise for such a barbaric act to a Diff.

how safe on the road is it?... tyre wear? scarey????

thanks

Rob

If you dont want to swap the diff over every time you get pissed off with the locker dont bother. i had a minispool in mine and it gave me the shits real bad on the road.

IMO i strongly urge others not to go full time locked diffs for frequent on road use.

agree - its a hassle havin a welded diff - thou the front might be okay if you use the locking/unlockin hubs.

Dangerous in the wet and tight turns on the tarmac can result in a broken axle.
