Hilux Shift on Fly t-case

Post by Scott »

I recently bought a Hilux that the previous owner had installed an SR5 gearbox and t-case into. The t-case is an electric actuated chain driven case. The car originally would have come with a gear driven case.

The previous owner never bothered hooking up the electrics to the t-case, so at the moment it has high range and low range, but no 4wd. Does anyone know what is required to wire it up?

The plug on the t-case has 5 wires. I would have thought all it needed was a power and earth to engage 4wd, but what do the other 3 wires do??

I don't plan on keeping the chain driven case too long, but it would be nice if I could get it working until it gets replaced.

One wire is the 4wd light
Other 2 go the the control modual for selecting 4wd
You can get it to work with a 6 pin 3 position self centering [off] switch

are they manaul or auto hubs? Live axle?

if it has manual hubs and live axle you should be able to get out and lock the hubs and cruise away in 4wd.

It is a 1990 model with solid axle and manual hubs. I would have thought I still have to get the t-case to engage 4wd, not just lock the hubs in.

It would be nice to have the gear driven case the car is supposed to have, but I knew all about it before I bought the car so it was no surprise. I have a dual t-case adapter on the way so the chain driven case won't be staying long anyway.

On another note, do chain driven cases all have electronic speedo cables, or do some still come with mechanical?
