Outback Challenge

Hey People,

I was shown this site from some of the guys from the CCDA, Im new to this sport and did my first event 2 weeks ago. Yep, the Outback Challenge, talk about jumping in the deep end..... I thought I would register to this site and have a chat to anyone who is interested in the OBC for next year. I dont have a whole heap of knowlege when it comes to getting a truck ready for an event like this but what I did worked. I ran a 91 Suzuki Sierra with a few mods, so if anyone would like a chat I would be happy to. Mind you Im at work so it will be in my breaks.

fill us in on what mods you did to the zuk. How did you like the event? How did you find the organisation of the event? What will you do differently next time? Got any pics?

I put in a 5" Calmini lift ran all the standard equipment like Roll Bar, GPS (Garmin 128 big screen), Winch (Premier 9000lbs). The motor was a GTI but after it blew 2 weeks before we were left with the standard 1.3.
We were well looked after by Motorway who supplied the Mongrel retread that sat around a 15x8 Sunrasia rim. And we did not have one flat the whole week.....this says alot for an Australian made retread.....good for the enviroment and good for the economy....! Thanks to Steve Hobbs for setting this up too. Other than a gutted interior and a 1" body lift the little Zook is pretty standard.
The event was very well run even though this was my 1st event I had nothing to compare it to, I really enjoyed myself and like I have told everyone, It has been the best thing I have ever done, the most hardest, but the most rewarding. I will be there next year with a list of mods in my head I need to get down on paper. This will be things like.....GTI swift motor, less springs in the Calmini lift, dual shock each corner, race seats, complete new rear tray, bigger petrol tank, power steering, diff lockers more lighting. Thats all I can think of right now but Im sure we will think of other stuff. As for photos, I have a couple of before and afters but will need to bring them in. I think Im on this site, its the white Suzuki with its front wheels in the air. Number 37.

Hey, Good to hear from someone who has ventured into the unknown.

I am doing the Gascoyne Dash (about 600km comp k's) l8r in the year in a mates F20 diahatsu as a Navi and looking to do it myself next year.

Any Pics of the roll bar would be sweet. What size tyres were you running as well, any gearing mods?

Hey Nic,

I will be able to send you some shots of the roll bar via your email as I struggle with this whole computer thingi.....
I didnt have enough time to look into gear mods let alone enough money to buy some. Next year I will put them in for sure.
I ran Motorway Mongrels (32's) on a 15x8 rim. Im no expert but I would have to say that these tyres are so underated. I will without a doubt run them again.
Good luck on the dash, Im looking to do some more events soon but I just have to save some more of that folding green stuff to get there, it just costs so much. I really do feel for the international teams.

Welcome abord i took the photo on here with the wheels in the air i would like to compete in the event as well but not sure how to go about getting sponsers till now i have built my trucks paid for every thing fuel entrys etc out of my own pocket . some people have and get a lot of sponsership i asume it is in most cases after they have proved them selves over time the rest are probly good at selling them selves and have contacts i guess .any way i have never had more fun 4 wheeling as i do in comps . Like i said before to you well done i thought you put in a good effort . Darren
If you can not get there in a 4wd its not worth looking at

Thanks Darren, you never know if your doing the right thing or not.
We were very lucky with sponsorship and it was all luck, If anyone needs aftermarket Suzuki stuff give Eddie a call at 4WD USA, he imports all the Calmini stuff and its good stuff.
Thankyou for taking the shots, Ive got it as my screen saver at the moment.
As for paying for all our stuff it was lucky that Dirk (driver/owner) was happy to donate his daily driver. I now own half of it due to all the equipment I bought. Your right though, most of the guys in my group at the OBC were connected to the 4WD industry in one way or another and if not that they were mechanics or come from thak kind of background. I heard that Cass Jones took 2 years off work to build up his monster......cool huh? We got sponsoship from Calmini, 4WD USA, Rokset, TJM, Pro Comp & Motorway. Nothing was actually given to us for free, we paid cost price but depending on the coverage we get from the mags and the OBC DVD we might be able to get a little bit more from our sponsors next year.........

well done in the OBC challenge Craig, you and Dirk were well known as "the boys", how the hell you fitted in there I don't know but just meeting you and seeing how much you were enjoying yourself was something that the OBC is famous for. I am not sure that Dirk picked up much from the GPS lesson I gave him at Nine Mile when you were sticking on the stickers, but being there, or any comp is the thing of experiances. good on ya.

Thankyou so much for the help with the GPS that day, Im sure we would have ended up in Sydney or somewhere similar without your help. Dirk and I had an absolute blast the whole time we were there. The guys in the 'A' group were nothing but fun and were willing to help at any given chance.
Dirk and I are really looking forward to getting ourselfs to next years event, a few mods including more power from the motor will be on the list.

Put forward a proposal of what the company can get out of their investment. Photos, and a Calendar of wats happening up till the event is completed. Remember, its all about THEM.. The sponsor.

Stating what media will be there, Magazines, TV, Radio etc... what events happen before event where your car will be on display, So if yoru going to a shopping centers, car shows, show them where you will be exposing their name to the public.

Thats for a start.. but it gets you in the right direction.
