Toyota Diffs

I might be needing a Passenger side diff on a toyota housing. If i get the old style diff with an inspetion plate, and do the cut and rotate thing, Will the castor be correct with the housing upside down (flipped over, no inspection plate, or backwards With plate.. depends on the diff i guess)

Are the diff banjos circular/oval.. can u put a diff in upside down?

Asking as i might need a diff like the jeeps.. having a LH pumpkin.. coz i might be able to get a Tcase from the states.. but with centred rear and lh front.

Do the 3rd members (? ) fit all housings? ie Hilux/FJ etc?

it could be done, but it would take alot of work.

cant put a diff upside down as that would cause it to spin the other way, plus you have all the pinion bearing oiling problems.

older landcruiser diffs have a course spline which means they arent interchangable with the late model diffs. have fun finding one too.

if your set on doing it, use a later model diff.

landcruiser diff centres are larger than hilux diff centres.

after you flip the diff over, the 'banjo' section of the diff has a notch where the crown wheel fits so this means you would have to reverse that notch to its original side to run standard diff.

where abouts are you located?

theres a few people on this board who modify landcruiser housings to accept GQ hi pinion diff centres. dont see why they cant mount it upside down for you while they are at it.

i think you would have to rotate the knuckles 180*

what transfer are you looking at getting ?
what are the advantages of this transfer ?

why not goto something like a jeep dana 44 or dana 60 in the front

why not use a late model jeep front diff like spaz said?


if i were going to do it, and we have talked about doing it to a pajero my mate owns, cutting and sleeving a hilux housing. basically cut the tubes off, swap the left to right and right to left and weld back together.

reason is jep diffs cost a SH!Tload more than a yota diff. Yota/nissan are more accessable (? )

Tcase could be a NP 208 or NV241.. Depends oin what info I can get. Other option is FJ early or GQ Tcase.

ORI have done that to a hilux diff.. under a pajero!

FJ diffs are "apparently" bolt on to a CJ.. just have to change brake lines and drive flange

dana300 is a better transfer case and is dirt cheap in the us. probably US$50-200 at the most.
You can get 4:1 gears for them
upgrade the outputs to 32 splines if you want
Also you can get a flip kit which turns it over 180 degrees and reverses the front output to the side you want. This costs US$550 though which is sucks.

There is also a home made flip kit if you have the skills.

You can get a front dana44 locally for around AUS$1000, but then you need locker, brackets etc etc.

They stole my idea mine was supposed to be the only Jabber with a Tojo front diff in Oz.
Well at least mine will have a Bundy diff and after all it has Hilux white duco :lol:

jeep diffs are $1250 complete. you would spend more than that buying and setting up a toyota diff to left hand pumpkin.
