Need pics of A frame mounts to diff

Post by tomsoffroad »

Can anyone share some pics of how they've connected the A frame too the diff on their trucks.
Was going to use a ball joint but have decided against it, I'm abit worried about it leavering out with articulation. Any help or ideas would be great.

I know you are worried about the balljoint but im using a Defender one so thought i would post a pick of my mount.

My shocks are set to limmit the flex just as the balljoint binds. I will prob eventually go with a Treg style trailer coupling but this set up gets it approved for the moment.

Cheers Ruff, I've thought about the treg type coupling, but your idea of using the shocks to limit the travel sounds like a good idea. By the way I've ended up rebuilding the A frame and spreading the mounts right out too the chassis.

Cheers Surfection thats a real tidy setup too. One question though....
Do you find the rubber bushes to be fine or would I be better to use brass on the swivel?

does that setup bind when the diff walks foward at one end as one bottom control arm shortens due to droop / compression. the wizard setup has a jonnie joint for this reason?

i am using a big balls kit on mine - $335 - dear for what it does but cheap for the work involved i guess.
cheers

In that pivot you can see in the pic i had high density body lift block material, which was fine and never showed any signs or wear. In the swivel which is in front of the pivot in the pic i had poly bushes you commonly find in sports car suspension. I had two in there drilled to suit the 1" bolt running through them, they were fine for a while but wouldn't be a huge success in the long term. If i were to build another A frame with street driving in mind i'd use snake racing's A frame balljoint, and just build around it.

Bru, I never noticed any binding in the rear but i was running fairly long, fairly flat links so i didn't have alot of axle steer. I imagine if that setup was put in the back of a patrol or 80 with stock or near stock arms there'd be a bit of binding. Either way it wasn't bad for a first try !!

Thanks for all the ideas guys. I.ve finished the new A frame and ended up sticking with the ball joint (I'll steal Ruffs idea with the shocks).]
Should do the trick, fingers crossed that if it breaks it happens on the ramp in the garage.
