GPS

What's the current trick GPS? I used to have a Garmin 12XL. Don't need a lot of fancy stuff just the ability to work out where the hell I am.

How accurate do u want?

Id recommend a RTK/DGPS trimble unit, will give u sub metre accuracy however is going to cost over $25k.

Ull know where you are atleast.

Basic GPS technology hasnt changed much, only the signal transmitted by the overhead satellites. Your garmin 12xl will still work fine and give u the accuracy your after.
Cheers,
Dan.

What is the next model up from this to except the external antenna ? ? ?

I have the older 4000XL and like they say it losses its damn memory to damn quick :) But i have it all set up with the external antenna and use it as my speedo/odometer and acuraccy is obviously abit better with the external antenna connected.

And for $100 thats damn cheap

It really depends what you intend to use it for. If its for general navigation and touring then I would suggest a hand held magellan meridian or a garmin gps II. If its for competition I would highly recommend the garmin 128 or if you have plenty of dollars the magellan big colour screen gps. I have used a 128 for 5 years of competition and have found it to be well suited to competition based navigation. :D

I've got a USB GPS Receiver that I got off of Ebay for $80.

Plug that into a lappy running OziExplorer ($90), and Natmap ($30?) and you've got a relatively cheap GPS solution with moving map, tracks, waypoints, etc.

Only problem Ive found is keeping the lappy in working order on bumpy tracks. If you have a proper mount it should make things last a little longer.

If you go with this setup you could also record your 4wd'in moments using a webcam and some realtime software (iuvcr).
