I was part of an Aussie Surf group on Yahoo for a couple of year though I had a 3.0Litre manual Surf and was exempt from the '2.4L' overheating problems. It seemed a pattern appeared over time. Many found that the viscous fan was indeed at fault and did not positively engage when called for, causing overheating, possible split radiator and a cracked head eventually. Still, even if the 2.4 problems are solved, they are still lacking a lot of performance compared to the 3Litres's. Save up, and pay that bit extra for the later 3.0TD model, Aug93 onwards. The 2.4L's have massive lag, which is a pain in manual form, where as the 3.0's have zero. Bottom end torque is bloody great and the manual's come with the R151F gearbox, meaning a very low first gear.

ok the problem with overheating was with the auto 2.4td as when they were made in japan they had there auto cooler in the bottom of the radiator and it blocked half of the flow through the botom outlet therefore reducing the amount of coolant flowing through the radiator and in turn increasing the temp to the point of engine destruction (or at least head cracking)
