Welding Q?

Just wondering if there are any problems welding mild steel tube to a zinc plated L bracket? Thanks in advance.

May be a stupid quection, but im new to the welding scene. :oops: :oops:

Dont weld on Zinc plated/galvinized steel as the zinc vapourizes and can make you pretty crook if you breathe the fumes. The Zinc also makes for a poor weld.

However..

If you spend a few mins with the flap disk on the grinder first and clean the zinc plating off the area your going to be welding on, you should have no probs (so long as you can otherwise weld properly)

yeah grind it off back to bright metal first

weld with a fan on a light breeze to blow the rest of the fumes away, but so strong that it blows the shield gas away

Never had ( cough) any effect ( weeze ) on me and I have ( splutter and coughs up white phleme) been welding zinc ( fights for a breath ) for years in an ( nearly chokeing to death ) unventalated workshop ! :roll:

As I recall, Tubemakers recommend welding on their duragal (zinc plated) sections and I have not found any problems with normal precautions. Hot dipped galvanising is another issue.

i have just built my camper with more gal than you can poke a zinc stick at. if you are new to welding i would grind it back. a grinding wheel works better than a flapper which tends to smuge it. if you can weld don't grind just prepare for the flare which tends to give the heat a green head start. the fumes are fine with a light fan, by my standards - but i have gone through a 5kg box of sticks in one sitting several times before i got my mig (for that very reason). rebuilding the outer edges on high speed mixer blades.

YEP I can relate to that and after a while you develope a imunity to all types of fumes and not bad doing a full days welding then going and having a few beers :crazyeyes:
