Ok fellas, out of all the transfer cases commonly available in Australia what would be your preference?
I am talking about what do you believe to be the strongest, how good is the aftermarket following, can it disconnect the rear drive , one that you can easily find parts for and price second hand.

Like us and follow on facebook for up to date information of what we are working on and great random specials!
The only ones I am aware of that you can disconnect the rear drive, are quite strong and have reasonable availability in Australia are New process 205 from Ford F trucks etc, Spicer model 20 from variou Jeep vehicles, and the spicer 300 fom International Scouts.
I personally wouldn't use any of these if I were building up a special vehicle, because the height of the rear output makes for acute driveshaft angles when compared to to offset tranfercases in LandCruisers and LandRovers. but I suppose this is only a concern on shorter wheelbase rigs.

Cheezy4x4 wrote:Drop into my work and you will see 2 rigs with them fitted and another 2 on the shelf and another 4 due in a week. So yep they are available in OZ..............................................Sorry, as for the HP 60's, yep got them also 2.5 tonne rockwells and Mogs too
I am thinking we need a vendors section on the forum....pleez
I think many of you have missed the point of the original question.
I may be wrong but I dont think you can disconnect the rear drive on Hilux or Nissan t/cases.and Atlas 2's are not readily available at a reasonable price 2nd hand. Bubs lives in Qld, so dropping into your shop in Bayswater Melb for a squizz Cheezy may not be all that convenient either.
Bill.
In that case I agree with those who say LandRover LT230.
Quite strong, 3.320:1 low range standard, easy adaptability, offset rear output. fulltime 4wd but easily converted to selective 4wd. PTO option.as common as arseholes and quite cheap these days.etc etc

gq seems so obvious. variety of nissan, lt1 corvette, ls1, holden 3.9 and 5l motors bolt up cheaply, duel transfer for 2wd high, low 4wd high low/low. marks gearsets available. strongest cheapest box. i paid $200 for my second case. you can remove the rear shaft. its all metric.
why be expensive and different for no honest reason other than wow factor of yank names! .....................then there's the weight aspect.......who said that .....................
cheers

The NP205 is a strong box and can be found readily in old Fullsize jeeps...sure not as common as hiluxes - but not rare either....
This box has a pretty ordinary 2:1 lowrange but its strong and there are aftermarket 3:1 ratios availble.
The Dana300 ACJ7 keep talking is readily available too - standard it's a good boxx - but it's weakness are the shafts - however there are kits available to rebuild the entire guts to bring it to vertually Atlas II strength, but about $2k less Also these are a nice short box which is good in a SBW rig.....
Most of the transfercases suggested need aftermarket help and lots of $$$$$ to be truly useful. If memory is correct the dana spicer 300 as used in v8 Scouts only had a 2.2:1 low range. The Jeep ones were a bit lower. LandRover Lt230, They also have full floating input and output shafts and the best hand brake in the business.and cope very well behind 6.5 litre GM deisels and New Venture 4500 gearboxes.

I'll confess to ignorance here - what's good about being able to disconnect the rear axle? I mean, I can think of rare occasions when it would be useful but I don't see it being needed often enough to justify a big spend.
I realise I probably haven't thought of something. What makes it worth it when a case without that ability is going to be enormously cheaper?

disconnect rear drive, pull handbrake on, turn around in no space with front wheel drive.
I wouldn't call an NV4500 a cheap or common tranny either
The Dana300 - scout or other was 2.62:1 stock - but 4:1 kits are available.
The previous Dana 20 had only 2.02:1.
BTW if you are thinking it's too Xy - what $$$ are we talking here???
What ratio is desired? ie if it's mostly strength, and not the ratio the D300 can be beefed up with 32spline Front & rear shafts for about $1k.....this is now plenty strong....It's if you want lower (& stronger) ratios that you'd need to add anothe $1kish....
