SPOA
Bring it to Tassie leave it with me for 2 weeks and i'll do it for u for $2500.

Chaos wants about $3500 to $4000 engineered.
That doesnt include shocks.
Shocks will set u back another $600 ontop of the SOA anyway. But ur standard shocks WILL just fit in there still, u just wont get much travel, but they will do for on road driving until u get the dollars.
My SOA cost me alot of money in parts, but they were parts i was willing to part with, the conversion cost me under $50 in cash, not including shocks or engineers

a mate recently went to a shop to get a quote for his L28 MQ shorty. but they said they cant do it because the tailshaft vibrates. i told him they were probably just making up excuses because they didnt wanna do it.
so kingy, your saying the crossmember doesnt foul the front shaft in the petrols? you still have to do a little cut and fold tho, right?

The crossmember in a petrol unit wont interfer with the front shaft on a SOA, no cuts/mods/nips/tucks are needed.383FJ45 wrote:so kingy, your saying the crossmember doesnt foul the front shaft in the petrols? you still have to do a little cut and fold tho, right?
However on a diesel unit the gearbox sits 135mm further back to allow room for the longer diesel motor, this means that the transfer is all so further back and therfore the front shaft almost sits on the crossmember after a SOA, thast maybe fine under suspension compression but not so good under tension. The gap between the front shaft and the crossmember on a diesel after a SOA is about 5mm !!!, thast why the crossmember has to be moved further back. It all so needs to be moved further back if fitting a 5 spd box where a 4 spd once lived.

ah k. thanks heaps for that.
he fitted a diesel 4 spd behind the petrol but im guessing the crossmember would still be in the original place.
i was always under the impression that MQ's had to have crossmember mods when SPOA, but its clearer now.
im thinking of doing it for him to save him a couple of grand. (coz thats what mates are for
)
i did my cruiser fairly easily. cant see it being much more difficult than that.

the differances in the 2 gearboxes is nill bar for the top cover and the hi/low shifter..... we are talking 4 spds here....
In the pics below one is a diesel and the other a petrol.
the petrol box is on the left..... note where the gearshift comes out compared to the other box.
The box on the right is a 5 spd and you can see the 5th gear extension housing at the rear of the box.
The shifter hole in the floor on MQ's is in the exact same place on both petrols and diesels, its the top covers that differ.

Cant you fit the 4 speed top cover to the 5 speed to get the shifter to sit further back?

yes

Remember I did this to mine to get it all ti line up and so I didnt have to cut the floor. Had I have fitted the diesel box as it was the shifter would have been under the heater somewhere, I kind figured that wasnt good.

Actually it pretty well straight foward, the 4spd top cover and shifter works a treat on top of the 5 spd box, main prob is that the reverse selector rubs and therefore needs a little machining to clear, other than that its simple.
I've had mine for a year now and no dramas but the box was tired before I fitted it, I've just scored another 5 spd and I am going to pull it down and pull a 4 spd down at the same time so they are side by side for a comparission and so I can figure out the differances if there are any.
Most of the bearing sizes are identicle according to the book ..... but I'll wait n see..

Cool, I might chase up a 4 speed to cover and do this down the track, I had to take a notch out of the front of the shifter hole to clear the boss the shifter sits in.
