timing belt
timing belt broke machanic said droped a bearing might of broke piston ,anyone ruffly no damage bill (machanic thinks something might of seized like a bearing)
i had a similar thing happen to me not long ago. the tensioning pulley on the timing belt siezed which ment it chewed the belt up and it snapped. luckily no damage to valves or pistons.
depending on your ability, i would have a shot at it yourself. make sure you have a manual for things like torque settings on head belts etc.... one thing i would do is replace the timing belt and siezed pulley or what ever the problem is, reset the timing and put it in 5th and roll it forward and see if you are bouncing valves. this will tell you if there is any major damage, and save removing the head. if you have any issues, PM me cos i've done this a couple of times before.

petrol or deisel
petrol : replace timing belt, bearing & oil seals then remove spark plugs & turn engine over by hand
deisel : replace timing belt, bearing & oil seals then remove glow plugs & turn engine over by hand.
removing spark plugs or glow plugs will allow easy turning of engine as compresion will not be present.
if when turning engine by hand you feel a hard spot stop this hard spot will more than likely be something internal is amiss

If its too hard to turn the engine over by hand. try puttin it in 5th gear and jack up the rear diff pumpkin and have a mate turn the rear tyres forward motion to turn the engine over slowly.

After pulling plugs of either sort out & still hard you don't want to turn engine any further as this may bend a valve or something

got damage bill lots of things broken, $2100 worth not good news thanks everyone for your help
I just replaced the idler and tensioner for the timing belt on my deisel hilux yesterday. I replaced the belt 25000 km's ago aswell as the idler and the tensioner but the idler collapsed, the only way I knew was that the end cover on the bearing had peiced through my timing cover and was sticking out beside the harmonic balance. i was very lucky as the lot only cost me 60 bucks and it could have been extremely expensive had I not noticed it.
