Ok, so I am hunting down an engine atm, but still not sure about Turbo vs. Non Turbo.
I am looking at a Supra 7MGE, but unsure what would be better for me. Some say due to the the turbo the 7MGET has less grunt down low (which they then argue, is better as it will be harder to break stuff under load in the 4x4).
The Non Turbo 7MGE is meant to be better allround (I am thinking a safer bet for off road).
Now some engines come with Emission controls from either Jap or Cali. Are there needed, bad, less performance, removeable?
Plus if anyone has an engine going cheap, let me know!
Tonka.

I have just sourced myself a 7mge for 500 including everything i need from a 1990 cressida for my 84 lux. you are wrong about a 7mgte having less torque than the natural engine. It has more torque and more power which will break more stuff under load.
If you want a powerfull 4by when your finished go the turbo because it is quite easy to push alot of horsepower out of these engines. I take it you know about the head gasket/stud problems anyway.
For emissions my car is exempt because of age but if your car is newer just use all the gear off the 7m.
If your manual with the g52 box you will have to get the bellhousing and clutch of an old ma70?? supra as most of the boxes behind these engines were auto. If you have a r154? then then conversion is a bit harder. I sourced mine for $130 from a guy who replaced his 7m with a 1uz. a helpful site for finding parts is www.toymods.org.au

I think he knows the power and the torque are more int he 7MGTE. What he is saying is that he has been told there is less low down power. As in before the turbo spools up and makes pressure.
As far as emissions goes it usually is whatever emissions are on whatever is newer, the vehicle or the engine. For instance I will have to run a cat convertor on my hilux which didnt origionally have one with the commo v6. Thats what I've been led to believe anyway.
the 7mgte hits peak torque at 3600 rpm, not sure of the figure but.
give me a few months and i will tell you how the 7mgte goes.
also try and find a half cut or complete car, it is near impossible to find wiring looms for one of these, i am going to end up making a loom from scratch for mine.
i bought my engine with no emission controlls on it.
you will need to run a charcoal canistor to meet aus standards, but i am hopeing to get away with not running the rest of emission controll.

the 7M-GTE's have a lower compression ratio than the 7M-GE. this means you can run more boost without detonation.
you will make more overall power with a low compression high boost engine than a high compression low boost engine.
the low compression is why the 7M-GE has more low down torque than the 7M-GTE. as previously stated, before the turbo spools up the fuel isnt under as much pressure as the high compression 7M-GE. this causes a slow burn which results poor torque figures.

This is true to some extent but when the engine does hit boost it will create much more torque and hp than a n/a engine, so if your worried about breaking 'stuff' this will be a much greater factor.
go to http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Pit/ ... gines.html and compare peak torque rpm between the two engines. and also check out the two graphs attahced to the 6mge which is the same as 7mge just less valves compared to the turbo 7m engine.
The underlining fact here is that the 7mgte WILL break more stuff than the 7mge.
Nice links by the way.
