oil cooler for sump

Post by MissDrew »

worth doing or not?

Since I am going to be running a remote oil filter up under my tray I`m thinking of putting in a oil cooler as well to help with bit more oil and of course cooling.

Motor would be working hard on a steep long hill, even more so if wet  . There for oil would have to be hotter then if just crusing. The way I`m looking at it is, if you can help keep the oil cool its got to help with keeping the motor cooler.

I wouldnt do it.
I dont think its really necessary and is more shiat to go wrong.
Image if it gets holed by a stick or something and you pump all your oil out onto the ground before you realise?

the same can happen to the sump, but yes the sump is stronger.

I have to run a remote oil filter anyway so it an`t going to be anymore lines that could get damaged.

If I do it it will be mounted in the floor of the tray under my spare wheel and above the fuel tank, it couldn`t get any more protected.

Found this info about oil cooling. Its after the trans coolers. http://www.alamomotorsports.com/pmc/Cat_page02.html

and of course Earl`s sell em not that I`d be buying from them http://members.ozemail.com.au/~earls/oil_cool.htm

You must let oil get to operating temp.

Just a cooler in line may stop this. You will also need an Oilstat in parrallel.
You will find if you fit one it will very rarely open.

if your fitting a turbo than an oil cooler is a good idea ive been going to fit one for mine for ages as when out doing the slow stuff and highway crusing at speeds the temp does get up. the oil cooler will fix this it would also fix all those with v6 and v8 with high running temps

yeah i have been told by a diesel mech that u should let the oil get 2 normal operating temp, therefore short trips u should let the oil warm up a bit b4 driving it so that wen u get there its warm coz apparently if u only half heat it them cool it destroys the oil. makin it go glugly.

does that make sense ??

yup

you need to have your oil within operating temperatures

there are oil coolers sold commercially which have a valve (someone may have mentioned this thing by name specific earlier) which only opens once a certain temp is reached thus ensuring operating temperature is maintained.

Your not worried about how long it will take to get oil pressure on start up with lines running to the tray and back?
