Help me Coily owners!

Post by ashhash »

Hey all,

Im new to this forum, been over at suzishop for a while though (ashhash_808)

Ive got a 96 Coily Sierra (strut type front suspension)
I want to get some new shocks to suit this car but no one seems to make them for the late 96 onwards cars.
I bought Ranchos but the rears were too long and the fronts were for the coilys without struts in front. (despite the "experts" at Auto Alliance saying they would fit.)
Grrr....

What have you all fitted to your cars?
HELP ME PLEASE, im starting to hate my zook...

Cheers,
Ash

Hey welcome aboard

There are about 5 coilly owners in here maybe more can't remember

There are some issues but it can be done.

I have a 3" lifted coilly. I had Koni custom shocks made up but you can make ranchos fit by welding on the spring seat collar onto the shock.

GRP auto also sell a shock for the front of a coilly they are trailwin or something like that. They seem to have good length.

On the coil front everybody has used something different from Vitara coils to god knows what. I have custom made springs from All Springs in Sydney. They have served me well but I have heard complaints from others.

Your rear shocks were to long, is there such a thing.......

Anyway do a search and you will find some good info

Bigballs?
I called you guys and you said you didnt do them!
Im not too worried about lift at the moment, the springs im looking at were 1.5" higher than stock I think.

Never seen a coily that wasn't struts

I told the guy I got the Ranchos from that I had a coily, he said sweet and sent me the shocks.
When I called and said they dont fit he went "ohh...coil over shock, sorry we dont do them"

Whats with that? Are there 2 different types of coily?
Ive heard that mid-96 onwards are different, is this right?

So you aren't looking for lift but the springs you were looking at were 1.5" taller?

What exactly are you after?

Do you want new stock shocks, or do you want some new different ones? Why do you want new shocks - are you old ones stuffed, not long enough etc/
If you are going to get a lift then you will need longer shocks anyway.
The Rancho shocks you bought do you still have them or did you return them?

Fill us in with some more detail of exactly what you are after and why and we can probably give you a better answer

hehe sorry to be vague, all this shit is just very confusing to a newbie

First off this car is my daily driver, lots of onroad stuff but I do want it to be capable offroad.

Im not worried either way about lift but considering lifted springs cost much the same as standard then I will buy some slightly longer ones when I can afford them

This car has 98000km on it and still had the original shocks, they look and ride like shit.
There is hardly any movement in them, I think theyre seized or something..
I heard Ranchos were good and they did look kickarse, but didnt fit..
I have returned them.

As I said I dont know heaps about all this, ive only had my zook for 5mnths or so.
Im just not used to having some many hassles getting aftermarket parts for a car (last car HJ Kingswood ;) ) and its driving me insane.

Cheers again,
Ash

oh and i meant to say that a cheap way if you are into making up your own stuff:

info i have gleaned off the web...................

holden hq rear shocks with spring seats off the rear of 96-02 lancer go up front, the spring seat should be 50mm off the centre of the lower eye for standard height. You will have to get the spring seats welded on

for the rear you can use vw combi rear shocks

hows that for ingenuity?? :D

Thanks for that Lester, Suziwest seem like helpful guys
$1100 (exchange) for springs and shocks seems a little steep. but the front shocks come pre-modded.
Suzisport quoted me $795 for a spring & shock package using their own brand (rebadged of course) of shocks.
Anyone tried these? Just a bit worried about quality I suppose...

Did you tell them it's for a coily, as that sounds like the price for the leafy package?

Huh, why did you laugh out loud at that?

Really struggling to figure out exactly what you are asking about. Must be me but I can't still figure out if you want stock length springs and shocks or lifted stuff or if you want a different shock or what

The standard struts are under $100 each they've only been available for about a month. You would have been told on the phone that we wern't interested in doing RAISED front struts for them.

Well thats what im saying man....its hard to find anything to fit the thing
I want a different shock, im not spending $220 each on genuine ones.
I want different springs, all I have ever been quoted are raised ones so I assume I will be getting raised ones.

What im asking for is ADVICE - what have you fitted, what worked, what didnt work etc etc. (as I said in my first post!)

Lester has obviously been through this and I think he given me the info I need.

Cheers all

I went through Carroll's at Wacol Brisbane. 2" VitRR coils + all shock $990. Front Shocks are custom. Had no problems at all with them.

Hi Ash, I think you will find the standard springs to be the main problem, they are so soft you are always bottomed out on the bump stops,(makeing it feel like the shocks are stuffed) You won't beleive the difference just a set of good springs will make. I find the King Springs to be great and highly rec'd them . I also have new Suzisport long trav rear shocks, they seem to work ok but dont look to be of very good quality , I dont expect them to last to long. (The standard shocks work ok with small lift)

Nice I think im getting somewhere now, Ive heard lots of good things about the Kings Springs now so ill get some of them.
Suziwest do the modified Ranchos so it a tossup between them or taking my chances with the Suzisport ones (cheers for your opinion nelligen)
Ill see how my wallet is feeling :D

Grimbo - you might have 2500 posts or whatever but you seem like an unhelpful arsehole....get over yourself
Its pricks like you that make it hard for newbies like myself to learn anything...

Cheers to everyone else for your actual HELP and ADVICE

Hey idiot, I was trying to make sense of what you were asking so we could give you a helpful and appropriate answer. if you tried using the english language properly and expressed exactly what you meant we wouldn't have to go through this.

If you'd bother taking your head out of your arse for 15 seconds you would see that Grimbo was actually trying to help but needed more info from you to provide useful and relevant advice.

It's pricks like you that give newbies a bad name, and you're not learning because you're not LISTENING.

Now let's shake hands and play nice :D

Ahh I thought thatd go down well...
Look it wasnt my intention to come to the forum and flame everyone in my first post..

If you READ my very first post I asked a simple question, "what have you all fitted to your cars?"
The reason I asked this is because im a new to this and dont know lots of the terminology (or the "english" as it was put).
I dont know what I can or cant fit to my car, and its made worse by the fact that the aftermarket guys dont wanna know about the coily.
Its a bit hard to "express exactly what I mean" when im not sure, I wouldnt be asking you if I was would I!!

Anyways sorry for the flame, its just so frustrating

my front shock i had modified by placing an inch wide collar underneigth the collar and had the pin on the top extended by an inch to suit. and the rear were the shocks from a kombi with the suzuki shock eye welded in place of the kombies.

that was with lovell 2.5 coils
i don't need no stinking quote for my sig. line!
