2.8L Diesel Engine Troubles...compression related
Hi all, been a little while since I posted here. As most of you know I sold the Twin Turbo Bundy and bought a Diesel Hilux....
As of today I have a problem with the hilux, the reason I say that the problem is compression related is because the car will not hold on an incline with the hand brake off whilst in gear! You can hear a very quiet noise that sounds like air escaping and then after a few seconds the car will roll back/forward a little. This is while the car is in 1st gear and parked on an incline.
I also noticed this morning that it took a little bit to start (had to turn it over several times to get the old girl going.
I am guessing (as it is only like 5degrees outside, and I dont want to go take a closer look and check compression figures until the wheather improves) that either one of the injectors/glowplugs is loose or the head gasket is fucked...
By the way the engine has only done 194'000kms.
What do you all think? Have any of you heard of this problem before?

dont know about the problem on the hill but the cold start sounds simialr to wot i had... basiclly i got stuck 1 mornign not too long ago as it was frezzing(coldest since ive had the rig) outside... went to go to work and it just would not start!! slow crankin etc... towed it to auto elec...he tested everythin and said glow plugs etc are sweet... BUT in a hilux the glow plug light in the dash goes out to early(a fault with sum luxs) so ur not giving it enough time... mine does a click liek a solinod or sumthin(not to sure) and then it will start sweet as...but if i dont wait for the click it wont start cold... takes bout 10 - 15sec after the glow plug light goes out in the dash. My auto elec also put in a button for me to manualy turn the glow plugs on incase sumthin is screwed up.... not had to use it yet thow.
duno if this will help.... maybe give it 2 runs of the glow plug light before u start it.

the incline problem may be normal./.. the 4x4 training course i just went on, the instructor pointed out this is a fault with hilux's, the compression won't hold you on a hill, said that it was a prob from new. (he was a nissan nut, out to wreck toyota's good name)

nick i got the same problem mate........ but it only happens when its in high 4 NOT in low 4 dunno but i also have 368 000 kms on the clock too...and still goin hard

nick the little toyota diesels (well all jap diesels really) are prone to sludging if they haven not had religiously regular oil changes with good oil, and with the injectors kept in good shape, I'd give it a rinse through with some diesel - pour in a litre before you drop your oil next, let it idle (don't drive it!) for 10 - 15 minutes then drop the oil, fill it with the cheapest k-mart oil you can and run it for 5 mins (to flush out the remains of the diesel), drop that oil too, change the filter, fill and go.
if you think it has compression problems get it tested before and after, see if a bit of diesel love will free up the rings etc. if it's just hard to start, look at the plugs.

we had our hiluxs head gasket blow not too long ago.....
250,000kms
we were leaking coolant outside the motor on the back of the #4 cly, and leaking coolant internally into cyl #2 and #3... and had an oil leak from the front of cyl #1.
we lost compression from it, and were extremely lucky to not have a cracked head when sent it in.
if your lux has ever boiled, theres an 80% chance that your head is cracked.
