A1,s four link woes

Well finally got me brake line fitted this arvo and decided that it was time for a flex test...........................

Now intially my only worries i thought i was gunna have was the lower link actually hittin the upper link chassis mount bracket..... .........

Well the got the trusty forklift out and picked up the drivers side rear ...........up n up n up ALL seemed fine shite loads less rear steer to the point now that my little 29"s now dont bind up on the chassis or inner guard .........

Checkin clearances on those brkt to link's all sweet clears by bout 20mm shock fully compressed (of which i have raised the original mount up by bout 40mm so im prob gettin alittle more up travel than the average GQ.................

I was surprised to see how well the front was actually workin (no 5 link but it was compressin and extendin well for a radius arm setup )

Now all is still good i picked it up till i actually picked the passenger side tyre off the ground yet it still seemed stable ( i didnt get get full travel outta the 99012's bout 800mm extension ) but i have retained upper and lower of my coils which i think was limiting the flex aswell as the drivers side shock being maxed out up...........


Now i double checked the clearances of the link to mount brkt all goood (then oh farrrrk) lower link fouls on da fukin chassis doh ..........its not limiting uptravel as it duz hit prob bout 50mm b4 i max out the shock............ its not hittin big time but its gotta be palcin some side stresses to that particular link /bushes /bolts /mount brkts.......... .....

How to resolve my initial thoughts were (1) just cut a section bout 20mm up 20mm in on the rail by bout 100mm and plate that with some 6mm to allow clearance to the link ( but i thought this was a bit bootie fab ) wat will engineers say to this ????? dislike i would assume................

(2) remake lower links outta smaller od seamless same as uppers 33.4x6.35 instead of bout 42 x6.35 this would give maybe enough to just clear but i dont want to sacrifice the strenght of my existin lowers....


(3) lower the link mount brkt on the diff which may give enough but will change the setup characteristics ...........

(4) im not hundred % sure if it will gain enough but lower the upper shock mount which will decrease travel and may well keep the link off enough to b less of a drama ..............

Sorry didnt get any pics but the are on the chassis is bout 3" or so long where the link hit then slide up around the chassis ( it did look like thelink was bending but i aint sure as i had fuk all light to really along the enitre link )

don't worry about it. there won't be much load compressing it at that point because the coil is probably starting to bind up in compression. and if there is some side load on it, it will bend itself out of the way and you won't have to worry anymore
adjust your bumpstops to suit and get you lockers/gears done.

this is the best way to figure shit out..... WHEEL IT BREAK IT THEN FIX IT

don't worry about it. there won't be much load compressing it at that point because the coil is probably starting to bind up in compression. and if there is some side load on it, it will bend itself out of the way and you won't have to worry anymore
adjust your bumpstops to suit and get you lockers/gears done.

Yeah checked it again this arvo........................other side this time if i had left the upper shhocks mounts as standard it would of been fine ..............but i think i might try a little clearance-in of the area as its fuk all .............


Yet it still hits hard enough to push the axle link bush tube across to hit the actuall mount brkt not a big drama i know but every other link is twisted up nice yet it aint foulin anywhere .....................

Upon a little bit betta light 2day it is actually bendin the link inwards yet it flexes back wen its dropped back down ........... ...............

i also have shite loads more room than i thought to route the exhaust .............new tank will get fitted this weekend so that i can finallise the route .............

I reckon something will need to be done if it's pushing the arm hard enough to push it accross onto the inside of the diff mount, can you not outboard the mounts on the diff a little more ? I would steer clear of messing up your chassis too much, don't wanna end up with poop all over your chassis aye hypo !!

Dan y is retaining the coils limiting flex ????? if they were not retained then the axle will just fall away from the truck until the links bind which in my book aint flex.

Ok boys settle ...........

Hypo wake up spring boy this aint leafs ....coils arte not retained from factory ........and most dont retain em hence y i saud this is limiting flex to another GQ/MAV that duz not have retained coils.......... ....................if they werent retained ya right the axle would droop till more than likely the shock reaches its travel limit..........which even in a normal 5 link would be far b4 the links bind enough to limit flex............................stick with ya leafs



Cheers Surfection its just a shame if this is the only that ENDS up wrong with it thats all , n without first tacking the links in then actually flexin (which would be the ideal way) i could not , i could only calculate ...........and wen you loook at the link u would think it would clear easy but i didnt take into account twist in the link and chassis which has brought the two together .................i done some bootie on it this arvo but it still hits so im thinkin wat the farrk i'll see how it goes if anything i may lower the upper shock mount back to the original position .................

Ya still thinkin bout leafs and chassis poop aint ya duz axle droop fit in betta with ya beliefs ....................

It is limitin axle droop ...........n if ya doont beleive DIZZ's truck is a good example he had a shite load of DROOP cause he had coil cone locators at the top hence the coil wasnt retained .......................... he had more travel oooppp poop i mean droop... and had the same shocks as wat im runnin


Im not complainin with havin em retained as it will hopefuly help my rig be more stable ........30-40 less DROOP aint gunna upset me ....................

I was practising this new phenomenon called....joking around, hence the Was i imagining the conversation we had regarding your chassis and how you'd like to start with a fresh one that hasn't had so much welding and grinding on it ?!?! Maybe poop was the wrong choice of words as it's commonly used to describe crap welding. I've never thought your welds are crap, you've been able to weld much longer than i have.
