INTEREST in AUSTRALIAN 4x4 E-zine (electronic magazine)?

INTEREST in AUSTRALIAN 4x4 E-zine (electronic magazine)?
I am in the early stages of developing an Australian 4x4 E-zine. With the popularity of web based information (obviously reflected by the success of sites such as outerlimits), the E-ZINE will be made available on a MEMBERS ONLY basis.
The idea involves the production of a web site and/or an email based distribution system. The E-ZINE hopes to cover areas such as events/competitions, tech articles, product reviews etc. Being web based, it lends itself to digital media such as movie clips etc.
The reason for this post is to ask the probable clientel what they would like to see in the E-zine? Whether it be an entirely new and uncovered area or just a suggestion on how to do it better.
The E-ZINE is not aimed at being in competition with magazines but to provide an easily accessible 4x4 read.
As it is still in the early stages of development any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Joel

I reckon having club areas that can be updated by a designated club member would be good. Also the facility to maybe host club websites.
Contributions would be from the public I presume, if so ensure you have a competent editor to rewrite articles etc.
Good luck with it, please feel free to contact me with any design issues as i am a designer by trade.
Cheers

Just one question ......
how do you take it to the dunny for a quiet read
Good Point.
As explained it is in development stage and you have my promise all of these important issues will be pondered. Hopefully, we will come to a compromise.

Well on that note, what do you think would be most successful... an email based distribution such as a .pdf document or a website setup that passwords are given out upon subscription.

I think a combo of both.
monthly PDF email out with full articles and rich media online.
to get someone to subscribe (particularly to pay for it), you need really good meaty info and rich media, which takes time and resources to collect. So be prepared to invest large volumes of time and money into getting worthwhile stuff up to get people to pay and advertises to then see the traffic to pay money for advertising to then give you some form of part payment to pay for the time and money oyu invest in getting more and more content online, also as the site gets popular, you pay more and more in hosting fees,... etc
We currently push out about 50 ish Gbs a month, own 2 servers in a decent datacenter in melbourne, had bugger all advertising $$ coming in, and have thought about charging for subscriptions for access to premium inforation, but everyone i speak to isn't keen on paying for it, otherwise i would have done it all about 18months ago.
It is a gutsy move that could make or break your hard earned cash.
we are presently ramping up our stuff online at present as i have a few other parties involved with things now.
FYI our site has about 2.5GB of content now :|

I thought top idea at first, but with the amount and growth of 4x4 forums and wheeling websites around the world i think you would have real trouble having people pay for it to be honest. Maybe in a larger market like the states but here in Aust too small a market. Something about paying for something to read thats not tangible.

yeh, i can really understand where this feedback is coming. As an enthusiast myself (as with everyone, having trouble funding the mods i make let alone stuff to read about other peoples mods etc.).
The issue of funding the project is currently being looked at. Whether it be from both members and advertising or just strictly advertising is a difficult one to answer. Ultimately we would like the advertising to cover the costs but understandably that does not always work that way.
Other similar setups such as www.autospeed.com.au charge $16.95 for 12 issues in 12 weeks. The E-zines we are producing would most likely be a monthly issue.
It is likely to be a long time before any success is reached and that is why much of the issues are being discussed now in order to organise a dedicated group of people to producing the E-zine.
Thanks for all your input.
Cheers,
Joel
