SWB Automatic

Post by Odum »

Hey all,

I am looking to buy a swp patrol and I have found one in great conddition ( 90 model) but its petrol and its also automatic....... I am not sure how the auto will go offroad from some serious bush work. I have only ever run my manual 4 runner.

Should I let the auto put me off ?? I would like to, over time modify the veichle a bit and do just more than beach work.

Please let me know your thoughts

cheezy's "EX" competition mav was an auto, but pushing a big motor. but it was probably still the auto back in the day when it was classified as a road car.

Autos rock offroad, no issues changin gears going up hill, or while in water or shit. Also in sand, an auto would toast a manual, as you change gear in manual you will lose your momentum and stop, auto will kickdown and drive away.

Mines auto, and wouldnt go back

YMMV

The Mav only got the auto in the newest rebuild, before that it was a 5 speed manual.

I think it depends a bit on the motor. What engine does it have?

Ive got an automatic in my SWB GQ and its good when climbing stuff, no need to play with the clutch as you would on a manual. BUT, it does tend to fast going down steep stuff, even when in first / lowrange.

Personally, after owning two manual four wheel drives, I reckon auto is better all round.

There are ways to make the auto hold back going down steep slippery hills. Ask if you get it.

i have my patrol down at wholesale auto trans at the moment, getting one of their valvebody's fitted, which increases line presure, and a convertor lock up switch, which when activated, locks up the clutch in the convertor, like a manual. same engine braking as a manual.
