upgrades for a 40
here i am again the newbie... i am really keen on upgrading the steering and suspensionon my FJ40 she's an 82. it just drives like it's on ball bearings (handling, what handling). i have limited mechanical knowledge. (i know whats going on but could never attempt this job) the hub seals on the real axle are leaking, so would it be advantages to change the diff whilst upgrading?? any tips would be much appreiciated. thanks fellas...

simon the axle seals are cheap and easy to replace, i buy my oil seals from a dude on silverwater rd in silverwater but you can get them from toyota
82 should be a power steered cruiser, so count yourself lucky, it could be worse

daily driver/weekend wheeler ?

i always pick my tyres first then build the car around them
decide now if you want to run 35in plus tyres
it will save you time upgrading suspension/axles etc later if you decide to go bigger later
the best thing about 40s is that they're old, cheap and you can hit them with a hammer and they love it

she's an 82 so it's got stock power steer (that's nice) but sometimes just keeping her on the road is a chore. there is sideways movement in the centre control arm. i replaced the inner bits but it's still the same.she just wanders. i have extended shackles on. but the suspensions so rock hard. i really only use her as a weekend warrior but, you know how it is, more performance is always good. i have lobbed in a 350 chev already so it's the next progression to upgrade the suspension & steering. i think 35 inch tires will eventually end up under her after the upgrade. what width of tire is good? any further tips on more upgrades?

Pretty much 35's come in 12.5" wide although you can get between 10.5 and 13.5
To fix the steering problem inspect all of your steering joints for play. Replace and / or adjust any that have excess play or are worn. Having longer shackles on the front generally changes your caster angle which makes the situation worse. The cure for this is to fit caster wedges to the front springs. You will be amazed at the improvement this makes.

I'm waiting on some tie rod ends to arrive from Qld at the moment .(5 for $69.60 +freight ).So I'll let you know how much difference it makes.I replaced the front springs (2" lift) and it made a hell of a lot of difference.But still got the OEM st.damper.
Yeah, its like driving in wheel ruts......on the bitumen.And forget about a wheel alignment!!
