Shifting on the fly

My question is this, i am in a hj47 toyota troopy and i have locked the front hubs but i am not in 4 wheel drive. at what speed can i shift into 4H. i know that i have to stop to shift into 4L but is it possible to shift into 4H "on the fly"

If it is like most 4x4's you can. Speeds vary, most times as long as the front tyres are slipping(gravel/sand,etc) and not rigid like on a tarmac road, you should be fine. Also front wheels should also be sortof straight ahead.

I have changed up to 4h at about 80 no probs.

as long as the front & rear wheels are spinning about the same its shouldnt be a prob what speed you change at. Jus dont have the rear spinning in the mud etc and try to engage.....

This may not be the case on your vehicle but most 4wds have a placard that explains shifting from 2h-4h-4l and back again. Otherwise it should be in the owners manual.

You didn't state if yours was manual or Auto. With a manual your gearing has to syncro in time as your enagaging different gearing ratio. Most will allow you to transfer from anywhere up to 80km but thats also vehichle specific, Autos have an easier time shifting between H4, L4 and normal.
For a Nissan Auto (factory std), the manual says -
From 4H to 2H any speed.
From 2H to 4H under 40kph
from 4H to 4L Stop vehicle.
This is what it says, but I know it can be done at higher as well, though you dod it too high you'll kill the transmission

like sixty said. if they are spinning the same speed it wont matter how many km/h you are doing.

low range is different. you have to stop as its meshing in different gears.

383FJ is wrong, i have to disagree, i can get my bundera into low range while still doing about 10kmh, it crunches a lil but it goes in alright

yeah just extend your gear lever so you can get more leverage, then force it in whenever you want.

yeah jas, hes one of my mates just stirring. :lol:

but he is kinda right. because when the gears arent aligned, you need movement to get them in.
