just wondering what the WMS (Wheel Mounting Surface) measurement is for a GU front axle?
how does that compare to a 60 series WMS measurement?
and are the control arms the same width apart in a GQ as in a GU?
thinking of doing a coil conversion up front. and would rather use an axle from a coil spring rig. (dont care about nissan vs toyota arguments, as long as my rims are the same .) was thinking a GU front end would be a good swap as it has big CVs, hi pinion, bigger ring gear than 80 series.
The 80 series front diff has some advantages over GQ- one being the smaller 'pumpkin' gives good ground clearance and may have better brakes, but if you can source a GQ'GU diff for less money that is way to go, plus better if you need stronger centre.
On rear if you still have cruiser transfer with offset output I would advise to NOT go the GQ/GU diff with it's centre pumpkin. When you see pics of my lux you'll understand.

there have been a few threads in the toyota section about rear 80 series hubs, on the rear of the 60 series diffs. the swap gains you around 35mm each side. (around the same gain as doing IFS hub swaps on the front axle)
with some mods you can also use the 80s rear discs on the 60.
id rather strength over ground clearance (i know wally in his 80ute has a big block with the std front. id still prefer the GU front end.)
not planning on using the nissan rear aswell, as i just bought a air locker and would like to keep it. i realise the offsets of the diffs, but thanks for the ideas.
Wally here in running Nissan front hipinion diff centre in a custom housing and 80 CV's brakes hubs and 100 FW hubs etc. 80 front diff gears arnt up to the abuse. when running Nissan front and Toy rear there's not many ratios that match up 4.1:1 and after market 4.88:1. Regeared to 4.375:1 in the front and 100 series rear end with 4.3:1 and it didn't work out have since grafted 4.375:1 Nissan rear into the 100 F/floating rear end and its going fine.

60 series rear housing, cut, modded and machined (8.0mm thick material)
GQ front centre
GQ air locker fitted with Toyota 80 series air locker side gears (30 spline)
80 swivel balls, swivel housings, axles, CV's, 16" brakes, spindles and Modified hubs to suit larger and bigger stud 100 series free wheel hubs.
I build the housing and do all the mods myself. Cruisers have better hubs, f/w hubs, bigger axles also the bearings are further appart which is better with big tyres. Nissan diff centres are cheap as well, the only extra cost i had was for the ARB locker toyota side gears ~$400. As for the total cost i had all the 80 front stuff all i brought was the Nissan centre and the rear 60 housing.

so the whole thing is based around the length of standard 80 series inner axles? no custom moving parts at all, other than machining the hubs for the bigger free wheel assembly?
Hypolux to what extent do you need the housing built. Bare housing with 80 swivel balls, and modded to suit GQ centre or with suspension mounts ETC ETC they can be narrower if required by using a 78 series LH axle also.

needs 2 b about GQ width with a GQ centre with ARB(which i currewntly have) i can do spring mounts, so yeah just basically put some *) series balls on there and i can do the rest
To mod the housing to take the GQ centre and fit the 80 swivels would be about $600 thats you supplying 60 rear housing and the 80 swivel balls. What you would need to determine is the realive angle between the "pinion angle" and the "caster angle" you require as this can be set to what ever you want. Also the spigot on the Toyota side gears needs to be shortened which i can do as part of the job but the price of new side gears needs to be included. I don't have the WMS dimension of and 80 diff but that easy to get and the 78 series is approx 80mm narrower that a 80 diff. If you would want GQ width i think it would be close to an 80 anyway.
