into a 4 speed, 1982 model FJ40, actually with a potent 350 V8, but we don't know if the stock tranny and T/C (and the axles) are able to hold up to the power of this particular engine (630 hp and about 600+ lb/ft of torque), this Toy is used just for dune running, and since i've seen some Arabs running very powerful big blocks in some Nissan GQ's, i thought that maybe the stock 'case is strong enough.
Or not?
i have an 82 with a 350 chev and the original gear box and transfer case. although my engine is no where near that powerful. it seems to be ok. i do find the transfer case pops out of 4x4 when it's being pushed hard. does anyone else find the transfer case on there fj40 pops out of 4x4? maybe there is a reason behind this??? who built the engine?? big power!!!
Almost us$ 10,000, though. Maybe the clutch becomes the weak link then, we need to keep a steady 80 km/h up some of the big dunes, that's why we need a lot of torque (and horses) out of the engine.
seriously tho an auto will be nicer on diffs, you wont lose speed between gear changes. and you can keep 2 hands on the wheel at all times to steer that beast.
i recon you will have a hard time keeping the front end down with that sort of power.
Thanks for the answers, but seems that we have to stick with a small block, the FJ40 has a PTO winch, that means the original power steering box can't be changed if we wanted to keep the winch, and the big block doesn't fit with that steering box in place. Maybe this guy buys a '92 Nissan Patrol to put that engine into, or we need to buy a seriously powerful small block, but this engine will be enough for what we want?
It has 464 hp@6100 rpm and 440 lb/ft@5300 rpm, will that be enough? The other option is:
I had a LS7 spec BBC then a 500HP 377CI SBC in a mudracer and i was running through a BJ42 4 speed box and split transfer and never had a problem with the box or transfer but the clutch took some sorting out thou. I run a 383 chev in my 40for 4 yrs the nissan gear box is stronger also a lot heavier and they run a centre rear out put so not realy suitable for your off centre rear diff id be inclind to run with the standard drive train as if you go through a couple of t/cases it will still be easer and cheaper than changeing it for something that may give you other probs any way.
If you can not get there in a 4wd its not worth looking at
