How can i tell if i have an autolocker?
Hi everyone
My car handles like crap in 4wd at any speed above a crawl, it pulls majorly from side to side on dirt roads. It has been suggested that i have an autolocker in the diff. How do i test this theory? How can i tell whetjer i have one or not.
I bought the car second hand and don't know the history it is a swb gq '89

An auto locker shouldn't actually cause it to handle badly off-road, although some are reputed to do so.
What you also might have is a welded front diff.
Anyway, jack the car up at the front, lock the hubs, leave the transfer case in high, and turn one front wheel with your hands. If the other front wheel turns along with the one you're turning (in the same direction) then you have some kind of locking on the front diff.
As to working out whether it's an auto locker or a welded diff or something else again, I'll leave that to someone with an autolocker to answer.

when i had my vit on the hoist i was playing around with the back diff that has a lockright in it.
when both back wheels were off the ground, if i spun one of them slowly, the other side wouldn't spin, and i could hear a clicking noise coming from the diff centre (the couplers ratcheting over the side gears), but if i grabbed the wheel from a stop and spun it quickly, it would engage the other side wheel and they would both spin at the same time.
so i reckon just jack up the front and back, and try this, it should tell ya if you have a lockright in it or not

I'm pretty sure i have an autolocker. But it must not be working properly.

not sure if this is a bum steer or not, but your avatar pic shows a SWB GQ? could you not put it in the back? This would lessen the 'orrible effects and you would still be getting some value out of it.

I run Detriots front and rear. As previously stated, remember they are actually automatic unlocking diffs, not the other way round. If you have the hubs in, and out of gear, and jack up one side at the front, you should be able to turn the wheel in the air slowly and hear a clicking from the diff. This should happen with both sides in turn. If you jack up both wheels, and turn a wheel quickly, then the diff should not have a chance to unlock, and both wheels should turn in the same direction. Ive never had a problem with bad handling with the Detriot in the front.
