Well it's time for a new exhaust and have made the rounds of a couple of shops and gotten a ear full of what they think is best. I have asked the same thing from all and they have then gone on to tell me what they think and how much.
My basic was that I wanted a 3in exhaust with a staight through muffler/resonator to replace the orginal exhaust for my SWB 85 SD33T Patrol. At this stage not planning on playing with boost etc but have heard that a larger exhaust should help with the turbo spinning up a little earlier in the rev range.
One said yeah not an issue see you tomorrow and bring $750 for the job. Another guys said $260 but there is no use going larger than 2.5 in as the back of the turbo is only 2.5in and any larger would be a waste..
My question is what have other done and what works. My motor has 295,000kays and new injectors etc and I am wanting to spend money on what works.
Is 3in the go or should I take the second guys comment and go 2.5??

3in Exhaust for SD33T Patrol????
I've got a 3" on mine, the conection to the 21/2" outlet is a bit dodgy but it works. The turbo whistles soooo loud, everyone comments. There is a bolt on adaptor floating around the UK i think, it eliminates the 21/2" elbow at the back of the turbo. Its pretty expensive if i recall correctly. If you wanna spend the money and are game to tempt fait by removing your turbo you could probably get a local machine shop to make you something. Personally my turbo looks pretty rusty and I'm affraid to touch it.
Go the 3" you'll never look back. I got a phony muffler on mine, so it is actually straight through although you can't really tell.
hope this helps
cheers

I`VE GOT A GQ 2.8 T With 3'' straight through pipe and very small turbo muffler which starts from back of turbo which removed the elbo union with 3'' bends . Sounds good not to loud you can here turbo through exhaust .But I wish i spent the $$$$ on ROCKHOPPER`S WHICH I NEED MORE
PS almost no turbo lag now but bugger all more power

GQ with big nuts
also 3-inc....
I kept the elbow on the turbo, but built 3-inch from there. cost me the equivalent of about 350 AUD in parts and 6-7 hours of work, half of it at the adapter and front bend.
It has a large straight-through muffler, and the sound is awesome.
The turbo doesn't charge much more, but it kicks in a bit earlier and reaches top boost correspondingly earlier.
My theory is that the increased volume of the system after the turbo elbow helps lowering the backpressure hence lets the turbo work better.
if you're going to increase pressure in the future, definitely go for a 3-inch.
When i started, i had absolutely nothing but a few words of advice to back me up, so at http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modul ... hp?t=17281 i've got a few pictures of my system showing how i built it.

All the IH Scout guys here in the USA think a 3" is to big for this motor. Even though some of them use it. Most will tell you a 2.5" is better for the motor and overall performance.
I can't say but thought I should toss it in here....
Here is a link to the IH Scout SD33(T) forums. And these guys know the SD33 real farking well! Many of them have massaged the SD33 to get much more out of it. They also have a therory as to the intercooler not increasing power much. Even though they do say it is better for the motor. I am just passing on what I have read there not saying it is facts. But if you ask a tech question on their board you will find they know a ton about the SD33(T). I am sure they would be interested in your mods and it's results...They are very helpful guys too so don't be shy!
