In a bit of a debate at the moment regarding fuel economy change when adding a turbo to a TD42.
I have heard from numerous people stating that their fuel economy DID NOT increase, and the only people that said it increased was because they were driving it a lot harder.
So, I have 3 questions.
1) When you fitted your turbo, what change did you notice in your ecomomy?
2) If the economy increased, was it because you were driving it a lot harder?
3) Can you maintain the same or better economy whilst still using some of the extra power of the turbo?

Turbo on a TD42- Better Economy??

I might not be the best person to answer this q, as I have only had my GQ for 3 months, but I did a run on the weekend that I did some calculations from.
Car: 1990 GQ LWB ST, DTS turbo installed 2000, 250,000ks, running 33s, me, wife and 3yo, 10kg bags, full of fuel.
Trip: From Gosford to Coffs Harbour, 4h30min driving time
462km used 59.58l. 12.9l/100km, or 18.23mpg.
As you can see from my driving time, averaging about 100km/h. I usually sit about 5-10 over the limit, traffic and weather permitting.

yes and no, you dont mean to but power is nice. Depends how you drove before. if you drove hard before and drive hard with turbo.

IMHO, no.
Drive harder, economy went down
Suppose it must as it takes power to move the weight quicker, so you use more fuel.
On highway FLAT cruise I get the same 22 to 24 mpg.
Around town gone down to about 18 from 20 as I drive harder (ie. move the weight quicker)
As you tend to use the extra torque etc it has to use more fuel so economy goes down.

1) After installing the turbo, economy was worse when driving around town. Economy improved during highway driving, provided I stuck to 100-110km/hr or so.
2) Without the turbo and running 33's, you had to thrash it just to get anywhere....5th was saved for Motorways!! Now with the turbo, it stays in 5th and pulls like a school boy up hills.
3) Its hard not to use the power once you've got it, you just can't help yourself. Plus, my pump hasn't got an aneroid and its overfueling off idle so it black smokes like a bastard until its up to speed.
