Holden V8 Oil Seal

Hey guys it looks like i have a small leak coming from the back of the engine i fear its the rear seal i have heard it is possible to fix this with engine still in the car is this true?

should be able to if you can remove the gearbox from under the car and access the rear of the engine.

i was reaing in the manual that you might be able to fix it by removing the sump and the last bearing apparently there is a haf seal there any one know about this one?

the v8's have a rope seal that can be replaced by droping the sump and rear main bearing cap then you pull out the old seal and put in the new one using a tool called a sneaky pete. some a halve seals where there two hard seals like a soft metal.

Yes they should be able to do it without removing the engine, but some times it is actually easier to remove the engine/ move the engine forward than what it is to remove the gearbox( transfer case connected, tail shafts), I have to do my gearbox front seal in the rangie and was told it would be easier to move the engine than gearbox but I've decided to do the clutch and my 308 rear seal at the same time so hence I go via the gearbox removal.

yes, but it is still a biggish job and a lot of shops will quote high because they probably don't want the job. it's nasty, it's messy, and using a sneaky pete is loaded with potential for failure. done right it's not a problem, but done bad it just means you need to have it done again.

is it possible to get the sump off your motor while it is installed (even if it needs the engine mounts undone and the engine lifted up)? a good rule of thumb is that the top of the sump needs to be dropped to the level of the bottom of the sump before it will come off. if the sump won't come off with the engine in place then the motor has to come out.

so if your leak isn't too bad, might be better to just live with it. try some wynns engine stop leak or something.
