Handbreak Issues in my 40
Hi All,
I had to re-install in the handbreak in my 40 over the weekend as it wasn't in when I brought it. Just wondering if anyone has or knows where I can get a diagram of the handbreak just to double check I installed it correctly. I think there is a nut missing but I'm not 100% sure.
Thanks a lot

hi there 40sNewbie,
what type of lever do you have?. i just replaced my dash mounted crap thing with a floor type mount, but mounted it on the seat frame. i am so pleased with how this worked out. even modified the cable myself and works really well. if you are interested i can take some pics for you.

the big question is ...is yorus transfer or rear diff mounted??
early ones were transfer mounted ,later which could be yours were mounted on rear diff.
my transfer one is dead, but i hear that they are at best ordinary.

no worries on the pix, will post hre as soon as pos.
i agree with DRS's comment. mine is in the transfer case. i have fitted over size shoes and machined the drum and its gone from pathetic to awsome. it took some time to get set up right, but i am very happy with the results. i think that the transfer case type requires a lot more maintenace too.. as will the 4 drums i have as well. (which, after a bit of messin around, over size shoes and machined drums are also very good now)

Mechman,
do you know any details on where you got the bits for your handbrake??
very curious to give that system a go.
so any info would be appreciated.

The shoes are available from any decent LC supplier, just take your old shoes in as they run an exchange program. the drum can be machined at any brake supplier. Best to give them the over size shoes to match properly.
The handbrake lever cost me 15 bucks from a wreckers and i believe is from a later model 40 than mine. The bracket was made from 25 sq RHS. i have tried to show as much detail in the pics as i can. The cable was modified from the standard. All i did was to shorten the cable to suit, re attach the threaded adjusting end and make up (from a metal tent peg) a new nipple. The nipple was secured in place by melting a fishing weight and "leading" the cable to the nipple.
sound more than what it was really... prolly only took me 3 hours all up, including a quick spray.
if you need any detailed drawings, just let me know.
