There goes another one...ON ROAD!!
G'day all,
Well yeasterday I was planning to fit my rear ARB locker at long last, using disco axles (which require disco hubs) and all I was waiting on were disco stub axles which I ordered on monday, getting sent Aust post.
Anyway they didn't send them till wednesday so I didn't get them (come on monday) so I wasn't able to fit my locker, which I needed in so I could go 4wding on sunday (I was organising) so I now can't go (sick of breaking rear diffs).
On the way home from work (where I left my locker new diff casing etc and was going to fit them) I was coming down my street, which has a decent hill down over a bridge and a steep hill up the other side. I was in traffic doing about 40 - 50kph in 2nd gear, when I heard BANG....I Blew a rear diff !!!!! what the F**K !!! I know they are sh1t but this one wasn't taken off road by me and I was driving normally on-road. What A piece of S**T. I will pull it out today and see what broke but I belive the pin has gone.
3 diffs in 3 months and not even trying. And the 3rd was On-road....seriously thinking of going nissans, mates thrash there trucks off road and no broken diffs or CV's

Das, It says that you have a Stage one V8 and a 90'' . Which one are you breaking diffs on ? and which diff are you breaking, front or rear? Rover diffs are crap but if you are breaking them that easily then something is not quite right. Maybe your centre difflock is in and the warning light is faulty . A Salisbury in back and an aftermarket difflock with 24 spline axles with reheat treated early Rangey or Toyota CVs is about as reliable as you would get for most purposes, without all the re engineering involved in fitting Nissan diffs.

Got the diff Out today, and was suprised
the carrier bearing cap on the driverside had come loose (2 bolts had come undone).... So loose that the crownwheel could move far enough away to no enguage with the pinion, hence no drive and loud griding noise as pinion teeth just hit the top of the CW teeth.
So how did this happen I ask, I did them up really tight (I admit I didn't use a torque wrench but I used a breaker bar till it wouldn't go any tighter) I also used loc-tite......The only thing I can think of is the loc-tite was an old bottle that I have had for awhile (and I mean awhile) and maybe had lost it's locking property's.
Thank god these diffs aren't as week as I thought when it happened on friday night.

DAS, for Loctite to work effectively both threads need to be totally clean and free from all lube. Brake clean, carby clean, etc, then dry.
What grade was it ?
Having said that, I've been told the stuff will go off, and a few people I know keep it in the frig. I've never asked the Loctite people if this is true, and only keep it on the shelf, but I've alwys kept epoxy adhesives in the freezer. Gives the wife the willies.
I was tipped off to that one by a RAAFie as the stuff used on aircraft and racecars has a definate use by date. Freezing it extends it indefinately.

Sounds like the torque was too low and the threads weren't clean enough. What size tyres do you run DAS??? If you only run up to 7.50's and don't have a heavy right foot offroad the diffs should be OK. A lot of the problem is caused by the centre pin spinning in the casing and the circlip(s) falling off. But this usually takes a while to happen. The Arb will fix the centre strength problem, and the 4.1CW&P should be fine up to 35" tyres.
