Automatic G\Box from Quad Cam V8 Soarer - 1UZFE
Hi Guys,
Can anyone tell me what they think of using the Auto box that suits the 1UZFE within a Rig.
Will it handle the power output in four wheel driving situations?
Has anyone used this box offroad before?
All help and advice greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine put one is his SWB cruiser and mated it to the original transfer. He has had no complaints yet. Even if you do kill one you can get a replacement for about $250.
Try and get the crown one, not the soarer one, as it has a separate computer that you can get to work the box if you run the OEM computer.

it all depends on how you drive
I am no longer going to use the A340E in my lux as I am concerned about strength
Also you will find no adaptors aftermarket to adapt the A340 to any t-case so that will be custom which unless you have the know how and the tools will cost a bit

The A series auto's are basically all the same configuration with minor variations and strength is not really a problem as Toyota uses them with these V8's and Turbo Supra's etc.
I used my A340H in my 4Runner behind a Ford HO 5.0 for 6 years without any problems.
Bubs, although strength is not really a major problem I would agree with your sentiments to check out other options. The biggest issue I found with these trans's is the torque convertor is way too small for decent HP and the electrics can be a PITA. It also requires recalibration if you use the factory ECU and alter your overall gear ratios from the tran's ECU factory ratio settings to any great extent etc.
I swapped a complete A340E front spigot section into my A340H so I could use the slightly larger V8 converter, which I also had modified to reduce high stall, but I found it was still too high for my likeing.
But if you MUST use this auto I personally wouldn't use the A340E as it has a small oil pan compared to the 4wd variants. Rather than try an adapt an A340E to a transfer it would be much easier to get a Surf A343F as it already has the transfer which is normal Hilux transfer. Swap in the front section from your A340E to use the A340E V8 converter, bolt up the bell and you're done.
But having said that if you want an auto I would strongly recommend using something else

all true
one good aspect is the with the A340E like I was going to use and all I guess I hadn't looked into it, is if you are using aftermarket engine managment which I strongly recommend as the stock computer does nothing good for the 1UZ-FE. Is you can get a seperate electronic shifting computer for it aftermarket so you drive the car like a triptronic in a sense. You select your gear it locks it in gear and it will not kick down, but you loose the drive option.
Problem with the A343F is that it uses a chain drive t-case

Not sure, I dont know how long the box is to start with.
I know in the MWBs you have to move the tranny back for a TH700, by about 200mm.
So for a SWB, if the box is same length as TH700 or even a 12" shorter you might aswell.
BJ would be a good one to ask for that...

Here is my opinion:
Grab the sump off a surf or prado, grab the filter while you are there (trust me they dont work without it) (after you pull the sump, another four bolts should give you the filter, it all bolts straight on then)
The sumps are triple the size. Fill it till the dipstick reads full, then put another litre or so in it.
The thing will then drive on its side, and be pretty reliable. Good clean fluid, and a nice big cooler are your friends.
I run 2L extra in mine and it can shift vertically, hooked to the roof of sams shed.

i used a 100# series 5 speed and transfer which bolted up. it was more expensive but much easier.
So how much was the landcruiser 5 speed?
What number (designation) did you use? (R151?)
They "bolt right up" using the lexuse bellhousing, or the cruiser bellhousing?
I am very intrigued and would like to know more....
have you got any pics of the setup??

Gday
So the 2uzfe 4.7 cruiser 5 speed box went straight onto the 1uz motor.
The bell housings of the 1fzfe and 1uzfe look identical other than the starter hump being in a different place. These motors are supposed to be from thesame zfe family, so u would expect them to have thesame bolt pattern on their ass.
I rang Toyota, and $750 will buy a new 1uzfe bell...that will fit a petrol or turbo diesel h151 box.

i acutally work in Toyota parts.
the 1FZ# is not in the same family of engines as the 1,3 or 4UZFE engines.
i am 99.99% sure a 1FZ bellhousing wont bolt up to a 1UZ ENGINE.
the gear box is the same though on a FZJ100 or a UZJ100 cruiser.
A bell housing to fit a 1uz engine to a h151 is a 2 piece housing and retails for around $900.
i tried to attach a pic but it wont let me, or i cant work it out.

So maybe the Hilux gear would run it quite well and bolt straight up.
Whats a couple of extra mounts for gearbox with the rest of the work needed?
If not a hilux box, what other boxes would be good, and be plenty of them, I need to see all available options.
If bellhousings are difficult to make, i need a bolt together setup.

BUBS: In saying that you think either my 5 speed and transfer, or the auto with my transfer would both be strong enough?
I would also be getting a b&m shifter if it will work with the box too. (my understanding is they only work/fit with some boxes.
What do you think would be easier and cheaper out of the adapters to make, 1UZ to 5speed or Auto to transfer (as you did)...
As the money goes, that is why I am working the options before i start...

I never ended up making the adaptor, as i am going T700r4
I would how ever make an adaptor A340E -> your Landcruiser t-case
I was about to make the hilux t-case to A340E there is not a lot to it, just need to sit down think it through and it wont be a big problem.

This will (hopefully) be going in a MWB FJ73 - FRP TOP
This one has no roof however and is a bit lighter.
Would like to be cutting the Guards soon but has Toyota Rav4 Mett. Blue paint, and front will be getting new springs and shocks, new shocks for rear, already has 60series leaves, but packs need modifying, also track bars for axle wrap.
$$$ I Know...
Will also have a go at a custom dash, Alloy plate then Painted, just don't have a TIG, or MIG with gas, or even Welding skills for that point.
Sorry BUBS, I think it was BJ that had one made once before.
But it should not be too hard to make you say?
Does anybody know if a B&M Shifter can be fitted to these?
Probably more so the Toyota Crown one as it is not shifted via the standard computer making ratios and tyres sizes easier to handle for speedo calibration, either way...
I have a friend who can pick up a cut for around the $1200 mark, but not too sure whether it is Lexus or Crown...
Don't have any of it yet, as still trying to work out the best option.

I've just mated a A343F's transfer from a 2.4L TD Surf to the A341E that came with my 1UZ. Got the complete Surf box from the classified's out of a local rag for a steal ($450).
Had to change put the output shaft from the Surf box in the 1UZ box as well as a few minor things. Came out sweet and looks just like factory.
Changing the output shaft required stripping the boxes down nearly completely though but I got there and the hybrid A341F box is ready to go.
The A341E and A343F are pretty much identical, mechanically and are the stongest of the A34x series, having the more clutches than the A340x.
The A341E has the more complex valve body by having both proportional control on the lockup solenoid as well as a proportional line pressure adjuctment solenoid. I've put oil pan back on from the 1UZ auto but I might rip this back off now as the Surf's auto has the deeper pan probably better suited to a 4WD.
If any one was wondering about the strength of the boxes, I've noticed that the late 90's Lexus 4WD's (GX470) had the A343F as their tranny until they went 5 speed a couple of years ago.

If you contact Scott at Venom Custom fabrications, he knows all about 1UZFE. He makes Cobra kit cars and puts 1UZ's in them. i know he has done a hilux or two.
i am sure he can probably answer some questions.
he is in Brisbane somewhere, he has got parts off me and i have got bits from him. i dont have his number handy.
i did about 8 mths homework before i started putting my 1UZ into the 40 i got. i originally bought it to put into the wifes Surf.
he was a big help.

My 1UZ is from a Soarer, with a combined ECU/ECT. It is going into a HJ75 series ute or soon to be UZJ75 if I'm successful. I'm ripping out the old diesel(cooked=no go) this weekend hopefully. I bloody hope the engine fits in the bay. I
In the end the changeover was a piece of cake though it was the first time I'd stripped down an auto before. They are by far the most complex thing on the vehicle, mechanically. But I worked may way through it, in a clean environment(important) and I am very confident about doing it all again. Both boxes are 95% similar so I stripped down the Surf box(which I dont need) to learn how it worked and was assembled before I tackled the Soarer box(Which I need). Just a few specialised circlip pliers are needed for an efficient job. I have access to all of this stuff.
Mounting the actual Surf adapter housing and transfer to the Soarer box is the dead easy part. One extra hole needs to be drilled and tapped and it mounts straight up perfectly.
The prior output shaft change took the most time. Putting the planetary gears and clutch packs back togethor and in the correct sequence takes a lot of trial and error aswell as much care. The seals and thrust bearings are fragile.
The speed sensor issue is also there too. I needed to modify the sensor rotor on a lathe for it to be compatible with the new output shaft. The surf used a reed switch and magnet for the SS#2 (Speed sensor # 2 input) where as the Soarer box uses a steel rotor with magnetic reluctor pickup. Not compatible betwee n the two.

Automatic or Manual - 1UZFE into MWB Cruiser Soft Top.
What would people see as the best option then gearbox wise?
With a V8 this size would you run an auto or a 5 Speed?
A lot of bush driving, getting into rock crawling and also little amounts of sand driving.
I would have thought Auto for ease of weird angles, hold yourself in your seat and not ahving to heel and toe for a days worth of driving.
Or is this V8 too small for an auto to run well and efficiently?
I don't know the best option, for the above mentioned reason, I would pick auto, but I do love manuals (never owned an auto before)...
BUBS: still mainly trying to work best options, currently travelling for work during the week, back on weekends only, this is until xmas, so I have some time to plan and have the work carried out, also truck has run out of rego, but tyres, susp. and roof on the way aswell as V8 Conv.

Guys the input so far has been overwhelming, but it just stopped one fine day.
I am not sure if I should go manual or auto, I think I would like auto, if there is enough grunt to go with it...
Is it really that hard to make a tranny adaptor compared to a g/box adaptor?
Also what boxes come with which model 1uz cars, which ones have separate computers (ECU/ECT - I dunno - please explain) and I am guessing you were saying once before that the sump swap is on the g/box???
Really need help on this one, I only want to do it once - for each car that is...

Really need help on this one, I only want to do it once - for each car that is...
