R151f to gear driven t-case

Post by Scott »

Can an R151f gearbox (out of 3.0L TD Hilux) be mated to a gear driven transfer case without buying any fancy adapters from the US?

If not, are there any suitable adapters from the US? I know the marlin crawler website mentions an adapter for the R150 to gear driven t-case, but will this adapter work for a R151f?

pretty sure yes. turbo/V6 4runners/surfs from the mid/late 80's use the R151F gearbox with the gear driven transfer. might be hard to find and/or expensive though.

R150F and R151F are identical except for ratios and minor production changes through the years, so the adaptor for the 150 should work for the 151.

Marlin and Advanced adaptors make a adaptor plate to fit the gear drive transfer case onto both the R150 and R151 chain drive gearbox BUT you will have to import and fit a 23 spline imput shaft / gear into the transfer case
OR have a 21 to 23 spline coupler made

I have made about a dozen cut and shut housings to fit the gear drive transfer case onto the R150 /R151 gearboxes using the double splined couplers

I will post a photo when I get my camera back of my daughter

Dumbdunce define expensive

Hi Guys,

Went for a search and found this post which is exactly what I want to do!

Couple of questions for the transfer-case gurus,
Nick, If the adaptor is $550, do you know how much a 23 Spline input shaft/gear is?

Toyrex, how much are the couplers? And how much for the cut n shut on a transfer case??

If I was going to source a R151F, what year model surf and hiluxs did it come out in and with what sized motor?? Petrol or Diesel too??
I need this information for my wrecker who reckons he might be able to
get one for me.

Also, seeing as the R154 will have the right M series bellhousing for my
7M conversion, should I just get that and source an adaptor for the transfer, or just go with the R151F as discussed and find a bellhousing to
suit the 7MGE?

Just investigating all options prior to taking delivery of 2 x 7M-GEs soon!!

Thanks heaps for your advice,
Bart

R151F were in the Hilux Surf's from 8/93(3.0L TD's) onwards. Older 2.4L TD Surfs had the R150F(in V6 $runner too) which is much the same but with a slightly taller first gear.
They're also in the current turbo diesel Hiluxes as well as the current HZJ78/79 Landcruiser utes/PC's.

Is there any way I can mate an R151F to a 7M-GE
I would presume that I would need a different bellhousing to
accomodate the shorter shaft? Does Dellows or whoever make
these??

Cheers,
Bart

I got a 1JZ -> R151f bellhousing from Dellows for my Bundera. It would be pretty safe to say they make an M series bell housing too. Give em a call.

Skip,
Dellows you say?
How much did you pay for your adaptor??
Just curious, what type front cut did you get the 1JZ from??

Andrew,
Is the 2.7L Petrol V6? But not being 4WD, it will probs not bolt up to
the transfer case as easy? But really not sure? Can anyone help out
on this?

Cheers,
Bart

Oh,
That's no good. I would have thought Toyota would opt for an R series of some sort (Arn't they stronger = more reliable??) for the larger motor.

Also,
Skip, mate how did you overcome the R151F - 23 Spline, Chain-driven Transfer case?? Did you just use it as is?

Cheers,
Bart

Yep go to dellows, no adaptor, just a new cast aluminium bellhousing. The bellhousing was around $500. My 1JZ comes from a Soarer. My Bundy was 2LT so it already had the r151f aboard.

Im seriously considering doing the same swap into a 89 onwards 4 runner, ill import from Japan again. I notice they have either R150f or R151f on the 2.4 litre turbo diesel. More practical and lighter than the bundy.

What are these babies worth- the R150, R151 and R154- secondhand?

Didn't the bundera have R154?

R154 was found only in Sports cars like Supra, Soarer etc. A R154 with M series bellhousing will set you back around $500, a R154 with JZ series bellhousing about $1500. Cant help you with prices on R150's or R151's.

Central coast 4x4 wreckers quoted me $1750 for a R151f when I was looking into it.

I've been outa touch for a while.... building a new house....... on a hill....... wot a nightmare !!!

Anyway

A good friend and engineer has already made himself an adapter for the geardriven transfer case ( with 21 spline input ) to fit onto an R151f. The adapter plate looks pretty simple, about 20mm alloy. he also fabricated his own dual transfer case adapter which is pretty cool :)

Hes worked out 2 ways to do a 23 to 21 spline adapter, his running version was fabricated with 2 internal splines cut in a new coupler ( cost about $280 ) but has worked out a way to press fit the factory ( shortened ) R151f and W56 couplers into a tube and weld for xtra strength.

On top of that hes got my spare W58 M Series bellhousing which is being used as a template to create W56 and R151 bellhousing to bolt up to 5M and 7M engines re-using the Diesel L series factory bellhousing.

His goal is to have a 7M-GTE onto an R151f into dual 21 spline transfers

The only snag at the mo is he rolled his Truck a weekend or so ago basically tossed the whole weapon away and is starting again ( see pic ).

The new Toy is a 1990 5 door Surf. Therefore the bellhousing is on the back burner until the Surf has the SAS and rebuilt rear end.

Anyway I'm pushing him ( as well as the builder, council, architect blah blah ) to keep the bellhousing and adapter moving along, as everyone knows how rare the factory W58 is and there aint nothing for the R151f...

I'll keep you posted when some results appear. Sorry to anyone who's tried to contact me lately but the house project has been a nightmare, time consuming and stessful

Mike
