Mate has a 86 rr and is thinking of converting to auto, can the bw35 ritter conversion be bolted up to a btr 4 speed ( from falcon 90+)

I haven't actually seen one, but believe that the BW35 was stuffed into the empty gearbox case of the Lt95 4 speed RangeRover, but I am not sure Ritter did this. I think they used a Ford C4 or C6 transmission ?

Sound strange but i seen one of the BW35 ones and thought all they have done is gutted the 95 case and bolted the box to the Front where the over long RR behousing was,I will see if i can find the pic,
I remember thinking GEEZ that thing is long !
As Bill said don,t know if it was the ritter conversion though.

This box was actually for sale in the F/S section

Looks as though you could still run some of the 95 gears in there as well !

I recall a magazine article about a hundred years ago about a 24 speed RangeRover that had a similar conversion but with all the Lt95 gears retained as well.

Yes, it's a hell of a conversion and long as Dozoor has mentioned.

The Ritter conversion is the C4 and the transfer case is severd and a custom made plater is welded up onto the face of the T/c and therefore the driveshafts don't have to be lengthened as per the BW35 conversion.

The BW conversion was done by a firm called off-road autoimatics back in the late 70's from what I have read. Overlander many years ago did an article on the BW converted Rangie (had a photocopy, but lost it!!).

Actually There are a couple of interesting things about some of the earlyer auto's , The early BW35 had two pumps ive been told , and unlike other autos because it has a pump at the rear on the output
it can be clutch started as long as the rear shaft gets turning enough to biuld the hyd/pres up , Biggest failure on the 35 was the tangs on the front pump input would tear off in the converter , resulting in no drive.
I always assumed that because it had the extra rear pump the box would be able to provide engine braking , To a certain extent as long as your revs where over your stall speed for the converter ,
(Ps bw35 are a weak Box )

The BW is a weak box, but there are plenty of old Rangie getting around with them without too many problems.

Still the ZF auto is the best upgrade as there are plenty to choose from and now getting motre affordable even with the TC included.

Nothing wrong with the old 3 speeders, just time to upgrade to something a bit more modern.
