perhaps when the ground is really uneven but you still only have the traction of 2 wheels at best rather then 4 at best.
There used to be an Alternative to spools and welding , Don,t know if he is still there used to have a web site but can,t find it,
The guy done a lot of speed way sedan ect , Cost was around $150
you just took your centre to him and he'd fill the centre with a metal, alloy of some type , Don,t get this mixed up with a lead locker,
He Gives a gurantee that the job he does is good , but it is just like a spool or welded ,so its for off road use only Right
Name was ARROW DIFFS taren Piont nsw,
Ps those that don,t know a Lead locker is filling the hemisphere with molten lead .

Up here decent 2nd hand centres arent fallin out the sky. Wreckers want like $350 or so, and private you lookin at like $200 and that not welded. Im happy with the centre i got now (Thanks Steve ) so can fit mini spool easily, and if dont like it remove it without having to source another centre like welding. Probably not have much hassle selling it too. Also mini spools are slightly less harsh on axles due to the mini spool takin some of the torsional load from the axle windup, while a welded diff does not.

Im talking about buying a center that has already been welded and no longer needed. Ie from someone who has since bought an air locker. Their must be a few around. People offer them to me and im not even looking.

with the rock gears i have only ever used the front maybe twice now
with the rear locker and gears, a good suspension lift, and running 30inch tyres i have driven alot of places that others in larger vehicle would not contiplate .
I mean this in the nicest possible way, but if you are driving terrain where you can't see the point in a front diff lock at all and your'e running 30's, perhaps it is understandable that you find a spool annoying.
It would be fair to say here in Vic that once you go to a rockhopper, you need a front locker all the more because you can no longer bounce over obstacles and have to drive them, and with that, most of the people discussing spools/welded diffs here are talking over 31" tyres.
Sure, under certain circumstances, a spool/welded diff might be considered "annoying" but IMHO not as annoying as having an open diff.
Sorry if this seems agressive, but I feel that whole welded diff thing only really applies when you are thinking that offroad performance is a higher priority than street manners, (as I believe that most of us do)
Ps with regard to the $300 landed mini spool - I'm not sure than it is wise to spent $300 in something that hangs inside the stock centre- ultimately, the case case will become the weak link and you will have trashed a centre anyway- you have to pull the whole thing apart anyway, so you can spend $30 on weld or $300 on a mini spool and have exactly the same outcome, 'cos if it breaks, it'll be an axle or the guts of the centre not the weld or the spool.

welcome Brocky
each to there own if you don't use your front locker you aint doing the terrain some of us do .
as for every day driving its been said before , its each to there own
that maybe the case that you may have diffrent terrain or maybe i just dont have the balls to push mine to the limits but i still like to have a go and i think for legallity reasons dont you think the media has given us enoguh troubles with bullbar issuse and that our vehicles are juice gusslers. if we just to start weld stuff and fully lock our diffs. isnt that giving them more ammo, all im saying is that if you do it properly, there is less chance of being pulled over being put off the road. and having to spend more money putting the vehicle back to standard. i have also driven my vehicle in 2h with rear locker ingaged wher others could not drive in 4 with opens, somone said this earlier and i agree totally.all i was suggesting was that you seriously think of all options before you go a head with welding. but i do not take any opinions to offense, thats why there opinions. thank you for allowing me to have my say, it is much appreciated. alot of other forums just try to roast you every time you make a comment.
mind your langauge in front of the boy, that goes for blasfamy as well
