Gearing for 35's
would the gearing in my FJ70 SWB have any problems with 35 inch boggers or claws? (off road mainly cause i will swap to 31's on road)

Rod McLod! How's it going?
change your transfer gears for the Marks gears with 8% high range underdrive, cheaper than new diff gears and they don't break' if you do break a diff you only need to get them from wreckers and not $$$ aftermarket. anyway it'll go ok with stock gears, but will run away a little bit down steep hills.

aren't these transfer case gears couple of grand dumbdunce? didnt think changing diff ratios would cost that much?
Yeah been busy last few months with family matters, 35's on a standard 80 & you think it went alright, get back into a standard one & you'll see the differance.
Go the ring & pinion change over first then if it still dose not perform how you like it then whack in some transfer gears, just my 2.2 cents worth (gst inc)

the gears themselves are around $1600, and can be installed by a backyard mechanic without too much drama, if the rest of the transfer is in decent shape there is not usually any need to replace anything. add around $200 for a transfer overhaul kit.
if you can find diff gears at wreckers for cheap, you're laughing. if you can't, you're looking at around $850+ per end, assuming you pull the diffs out yourself, take them to a shop to get the gears changed, and reinstall them yourself. diffs is far and away the bigger job but I agree it is cheaper if you have the skills ahd the tools to do the diff gear swap yourself. no special tools are required to do the transfer gears swap, to do diff gears you need a dial gauge, a press, big and little torque wrenches, carrier bearing adjuster nut wrench, and a ton of patience of you've never done it before. add to all that, the higher (numerically lower) your diff ratio, the stronger your diff - and breaking the 4.1's is easy enough if you drive hard with big tyres. to get diff gears to make enough difference in low range you need to go stupid low - the toyota stout 6.2:1 are the pick - which mean your motor is screaming on-road at any decent speed. changing the transfer gears you get a slight underdrive in high range to compensate for big rubber on the road, and a bigger improvement in low range than you can get with diff gears. imnsho it really is a no-brainer unless you've got stacks of cash, then you do both
so yeah the parts cost of the transfer gears is higher, but the install costs level them out or bring the transfer gears out in front, and the added risk of breakage involved with lower ratio diffs tips the balance well in favour of the transfer gears.

G'day Guys
Not sure who you get your R&P gears through but $850each end is a rip off. We get our R&P through MarlinCrawler and All Pro Offroad which get these gears cut by the original toyo gear cutter. The last 5.29HP gears we sold were to Bitsamissing the moderator for the Pajero forum section for $599 on special. Low pinions are even cheaper.
If you want even cheaper we get Yukon & Motive gears.
So i would say you should be able to get away with quality R&Ps under $1,000.

i am gonna try it standard with no changes, cept spacers on the front wheels. Cross fingers that no more money needs to be spent after the tyres and rims and shocks and new muffler and EFI and cutting the sh!t out of the body to make it a SWB ute and OMFG i need another job!

glen1n wrote:there is no problem at all thankfully, car runs just the same as before, and cant notice much of a difference in speed in low range either, so i am very happy
no matter what the gear ratio, it falls over on either side just as easily with 31's or 35's

Is there a similar option for a hilux? Couldn't see anything on the marks site.
Ta,

<EDIT>
Ok I was going to start a new thread but here is prolly the place (don't mean to hijack!)
The 4.8 diffs would be ok to run 33's on a lux?
What is the easiest way to do it, and what do I need?
thanks,
Benno

there are a lot of gearing options for Hilux but you can't change the high range ratio. which diff gears to run depend on what engine and tyre size combo you have, and what kind of driving you want to do (what what diffs you have to start with!) - 4.88's are ok for 33 - 35's for a small engine (L, 2L, 3Y etc) but if you have a bigger engine than that then it's probably a better idea to stick with stronger 4.56 or 4.3 diffs and invest in transfer gears to improve low range performance. taller (nummerically lower) diff ratios mean lower highway rpm and that is good for everyone.

when people say 4.88 are they actually referring to a 4.875?
yes
The wrecker tells me he's got a pair for 385 each, so I'm thinking about doing the swap this weekend. Is it a PITA job?
swapping the whole diffs is pretty easy. $385 is a bit high, last time I bought one it was $100 haggled down to $50.
Anyone else got a 2.4 diesel hilux with 33's and 4.88 diffs?
I had 33's and 35's on my 2.4 (turbo) bundera. a lot heavier than a hilux (2200kg) but it was bearable. a bit hard to get off the mark but the highway revs were good and fuel economy was ok.
