Not many!!

We were working it out the other day.

Sam paid 5 grand for PORTALS (6" MORE GOUND CLEARANCE), SUPER STONG EVERYTHING AND THEY ARE ALREADY FITTED WITH LOCKERS!!!!!

Not to bad compared to something like hilux.

Say $1000.00 for a pair of hilux diffs.

To get some strength (no where near a MOG) you need to fit chromoly axles ($500.00 for a pair of front axles) and $1200.00 for longfields.

Now to get selectable lockers you need a pair of ARB's so theres another $2400.00.

Now total all that up....

uummm dddaaaa deeee 1 plus ummmm subtract the 3 ummmmmm eeeeerrrrrrrrrr carry the 2 eeeerrrr mmmmm and you end up with.....

$5100.00

Now even if you already have the hilux diffs that only saves you $1000.00 but for the extra ground clearance and strength that should be worth the extra grand!!!!

What, are you, f**ken Rain Man or something???!!!!!!

      Now thats funny

Ok here is the rundown on my diffs and approx costs to give a comparison on Sams.(These are Second Hand Prices exept for the longfields and the airlockers.)

FRONT DIFF
-Complete hilux diffhousing with swivels-$150
-4.88 Diff centre low pinion style-$350
-Inner Axles-$250 the pair including the stock CV cause no-one seperates the CVs from the axle.
-Longfield CVs-$1300 the pair.
-Ventilated Disks and calipers-$100
-ARB Airlocker-$1122:00.
-Additional bracing and plating-$50

TOTAL $3321:00

REAR DIFF
-Complete wide track housing with axles-$150
-4.88 diff centre-$350
-ARB Airlocker-$1122:00.
-Disk Brake conversion-Owes me $250 but is prob worth $500+ But im working on the $250.
Additional Bracing and plating-$100

TOTAL $1972:00

So in total i have over $5293:00 in POS hilux axles that are realisticaly good for up to a 35" tyre. And this is still all disasembled i havent included labour in assembling them.

Sams axles are factory fitted with lockers and are designed for a vehicle that weighs in exess of 10ton and need no bracing or plating.

So is the outlay realy that much?

Ps;The above costs are only approximates for someone that wanted to build axles the same as mine and is not what they owe me.

The other thing with the mogs is that you can probably get away with stock transfer gears cause the diff ratio is 7.54:1.
So there is more money saved there.

With a standard ford bronco motor/manual gearbox and an NP205 transfer (this has a low range of only 2:1) I get 100:1 overall.

If I used a later model NP208 with the 2.72 (or something) I would be at 136:1 (which IMO would be too low)

Also dont need to run mega $$$$ tyres to get the clearance. Think Im going to run the 37MTRs (about $2000 for a set) instead of my 42 tsls ($4000 a set)

So between the transfer gears and the tyres theres another $3000 to $4000 dollars saved.

Damn, Im almost making money here.

$5k for Mogs is a good price. I paid $3k for my Volvos but I won't be able to get as good a price anymore. So if I were to do it again, it'd Mogs for sure.

Doesn't matter what axle you compare it to, $5000 is cheap. For any other axle lockers and gears will run to $3000-$4000 so for the $1000-$2000 extra you are getting a hell of a lot of axle, mega strong & 150mm of extra air....

ANd remember you can sell your POS old hilux/cruiser/nissan/jeep axles to someone else after you have fitted the mogs or whatever.

what would someone pay for sams old dana44's??

subtract that from the price of the mogs...

The attachments are simply JPG pictures which open up in a new browser window. Make sure you don't have any PopupStopper type applications running. Also, the attachments have spaces in the filename so perhaps that might be causing you problems. Try saving them to your PC with simplified names (like pic1.jpg etc...) and viewing them from there. If you still have problems, send me a private message so we can keep the Tech thread uncluttered. Good luck.

these diffs are sometimes as much as 40 years old! There is some good technology there, the 404s, are old trucks! but the technology and quality that went into them is awesome!

Very nice Sam.
Are you going to cut them or just leave em as they are?

I will leave tham stock. With 15in wheels and the 42s on 10in rims I am at about 2200mm from outside of tyre to outside of tyre.

Check the thread on pirate...

Knowing Sam, I'm sure this thing will be even more unstoppable and have a lower CofG than the last strangerover, but he will still manage to roll it at least once.

I think he means he flopped it, he definitely flopped the blue machine in his own backyard, I seen the video, taking a rather adventurous line across the rock stack.

Scenario I pictured:
*pommy accent* "Darling, pass the champagne,

SO, i was out driving the rover and the next thing i know i had champagne on my tweeds, a dreadful tragedy

pass the caviar darling, wheeling these range rovers is fun"

Just joking, that was my range rover owner impression, but seriously, not the typical range rover owner, and certainly NOT the typical range rover  and ill bet they never thought it would see that much hell!
