Hi Guys,
I have a strange question re the oil filters that go on my 1990 GQ.
I did an oil change last thursday and am confused as to what I should be using/am using.
The bloke at the shop looked up my car 1990 GQ PATROL, TD42 (4.2 litre diesel) and gave me 2 x Z115 compatible oil filters. I took off the old filters and checked, and they were Z503 compatible. They looked very similar to the other filters, maybe 5mm shorter in the body than the new ones. The rubber oil seal ring is the szme size and diameter as the old ones too.
I called the guy and he said that the Z503 is meant for a 1997 on 4.2 diesel. The Z115 is listed as correct for my year model.
The date of manufacture on the side of my rocker cover is 04/90, but I guess my engine number could be different. Can anyone confirm what should be on the car? Where is the engine #? (easy place, I bet...)
BTW, the new filters (Z115) fitted well and have not leaked, so I assume they are good for the job.
thoughts?
Andrew

Z115 is the filter of choice. Nissan list two filters for the early models up to 11/92 & after but the 115 is designed for both. The difference is in the valve which stops the oil from returning back to the sump. It keeps the filter full so it will pick up oil pressure quickly. If your oil light is going off after a few seconds then its ok.

funny that you mention the oil pressure light. I had been worried that it was taking up to 5 seconds for the oil light to go out, but with the new 115s fitted, it goes out in about 1 second.
Thanks for the details. I am now satisfied that I have not done anything wrong with the car.

How come the Z115's wont fit on a Ford block? Is it really OK to use a Z9 on the early TD42? I'd love to use them because I can get them very cheaply but dont want to to stuff anything. (looking for more reassurance here)

It depended if the vehicle had air con or not. The AC bracket would not let the 115 fit. Must have slightly different dimensions also the tread was tight. I know that sounds funny as the threads should be the same but they were not. Mind you I havn't tried this since my apprenticeship (17 years ago) so Ryco could have changed the tread to the same as the 115.
