hey guys got do an exo cage on my truck before xrcc, wat size steel should i use and wat thickness should it be

also where can i get some pics of exo cages????

i used 32nb stuff on mine which is something like 43mm od and 3.2mm wall thickness i think.

I have seen a white hilux around with the sort of cage you might probably need?

32NB is fine if you arent going to roll it but works really well to stop shopping trolley dents

If i built a cage (like BeeBee's ) it would be out of bigger tube than 32nb, although 32 and 25 is great for gussets and protecting the headlights.

could you explain this a bit further please? I was under the impression that a large number of competiters in XRCC and the recent PUOSU used this size tubing. But that's just the impression i get from looking at pics and reading some articles. Maybe i am wrong. Surelly a well designed and constructed roll cage made from 32NB seamless tubing would be more than strong enough? What size and type of pipe / tubing does everyone use?

i know for sure they aren't seamless, sam said it in another thread somewhere that they used normal old mild steel

DOM means Drawn Over Mandrel. I don't know what the others mean.

So Sam - Do you guys use DOM for your buggy's or something else (ERW???).

Everything so far is just normal old mild steel pipe. The stuff with a welded seam.

I wouldn't use DOM For an exo. the 32nb pipe is thicker and will cope with a lot more rock rash thaan the DOM.
All our exo's and the buggy was made out of 32nb which is 3.6mm thick.

Most comp regs prfer to use DOM or any CCDA event will have to be DOM as per the cams specs.

If you are saying that 32 in 32nb is the internal diameter, that means it is 5.2mm wall!!! since the outside diameter is 40.4mm according to the website below.

i dont think its internal diameter..........it stands for nominal bore....whatever that is?

mine certainly isn't 5.4mm wall thickness and its 32nb

from what i can gather (could be wrong)

32nb is a size standard.

eg say you a pipe company want a range of sizes

you choose 20mm 40mm 60mm id (nb)
you choose 3mm as your standard wall thichness for these three pipes.

your od's are 26,46,66mm - they are then your od standards

you make different wall thicknesses whilst maintaining the od's of 26,46,66. (so threadded ends, fittings etc still fit)

the pipe is called 20,40,60 nb each being a size range each having 26,46,66mm od's with varying id's (hence wall thicknesses) yet each size is based on the standards chosen originally and the ranges are called 20nb 40nb 60nb.

i guess this comes from steam days where you may want to increase flow of a 1" pipe. ie 1"nb. you reduce the wall thickness whilst maintaing the od - fittings etc, yet are still working within the pipe range 1"nb

Pipe, inteneded for conveying a product internally, will generally be expressed as nominal bore (N.B.) up to 12" diameter. Over 14"diameter, the size becomes Outside Diameter or O.D.

Tube, however, is intended for structural use, and will be expressed as an O.D and a wall thickness.

I am not a great fan of using ERW or PIPe for safety equipment, it was generally not intended for the structural uses we are putting it to. I think that this is an area that will see some stricter regulatio in the Future.

As an exmaple, I use 1 3/4" Racetech 350 tube, generally with 2.4mm wall. (This is for Suzuki applications and plenty strong enough for cars this light.)

Should 40NB be used for the main hoops and 32NB for the cross bracing?
What about wall thickness? just use medium wall?
I dont want to add heaps of weight up high and cause the exo to be needed lots

I don't really want to put it the test but I do want it to work if goes pear shaped one day.

32nb is about $8.50 a metre btw since noone else has answered.

For the larger vehicles i can understand using the 3.2 wall, but what about smaller vehicles like zooks/rockys/etc, would 2.6 wall be enough, as the pipe is quite heavy?
