gen 3 into gq questions (ute pics)
gen 3 into gq questions (ute pics)
i have ordered my marks kit, and put a deposit on my motor (want to get all the bits together first so i get max warranty)
i am told by marks that the standard sump will hit the diff (vx commodore ss motor), do i have to use a castlemaine rod shop sump -$900 or is there a cheaper alternative.
i have the ecu already who can i send it to to get it re programmed so it no longer needs the bcm the quotes so far are way too steep for what should be a common easy mod. (or is it worth the $1000 to get 25kw at the wheels - for the obc - worried about fuel consumption as i have chopped off my chassis and have limited space for fuel)
contact phone numbers of suppliers you have used to adress this if possible.
cheers

bru - as in my PM will say it in here. give Daniel a call @ www.chipmaster.com.au - he is the best in the business.
cheaper alternative on a sump - try a US sump and pickup. they are basically the reverse pattern of the australian gen3 where pickup is opposite of the US.
Hope that helps
TOM
i think i will use chipmaster, his programming starts at $1000 though!
good to have someone i can drive to - good excuse for a byron surf trip!

alternativly try mark @ protorque engines - i believe hes in brendale. he specialises in gen3 programming as well and corrobates with daniel @ chipmaster as well.
US sump can be sought from www.eagleautospares.com.au

i made the front bar and chopped the cab myself. yes the tyres are deliberatly inverted on the front - the rear are 'correct'! i checked with the rep and he recons they are speed rated backwards. plenty do this in the states. forwards for mud backwards for rocks - helps stop slipping off as it pulls to the center rather than away from it.

The motor you are using, is it a 5 litre, 304/308?
if so u will have a front sump and front oil pickup.
The fix for this is easy as anything and it wont cost u $900

Just go to a wrecker and ask for a REAR SUMP from a HQ or similar 308 and and oil pickup to suit.
Because the block is the same all through the older rear sump and oil pickup will bolt straight up.
Problem solved

If u have a 5.7 litre Gen3, ( MY BAAD I JUST READ THE TOPIC, you are fitting a Gen 3

Anyways, i havnt done it this way, but because the GEN3 motors are Chevs you should be able to get a rear sump off an older HQ ( or similar ) 350 chev, and the oil pickup and fit them up the same way.
I havnt done this, i know the holdens work.
Not sure about whether the Gen 3 motor is completely different from standard Chev......
anyway, its worth looking into for the money u could save

there isn't any parts that are the same between the gen 1/gen 2 chev and the gen 3. not even the bolts!! even the bore and stroke is different!! different length and width blocks, everything. it may as well be made by mazda!!

You're right there.. My gen3 was different in many ways to the previous gen's

even that is debatable....gen 3, ls1. holden has made no reference ever to the chev origins of this motor, even when describing the deplorable quality control in the USA

Hey bru21,
Found this while searching the net from this site http://www.cmr.uq.edu.au/~rotor/the_shed/mike_harris_rangie/
Might help a little? As you said you would think being computer controlled they could just delete this part. Have heard that it is better to have it though as it plays a part in the general running of the motor.
Cheers
Brian
