40's on LPG

hey guys. I know a few of you have LPG systems or contemplated it, would appriciate your thoughts.

running a holden 253 in a bj42. I'd like to run it on st8 gas but asked around if i can mount the tank underneath.

Will a tank fit underneath? and will i have to modify a great deal for it to fit? I'd rather have it there as I'd like to keep the back empty for my other crap.

I have seen them mounted their but you can't fit a very big one in. their was talk of someone (gas research I think) making square shape tanks for this sort of thing but I don't know if anything ever came of it.

i have dual fuel on my fj40 chev. i recommend it cause its really cheap (in perth we get a $500 rebate for installing it) my tank is 65L and under the back behind the rear diff. it doesnt drop below the level of the diff and doesnt affect departure angle. i have seen a rangie with two smaller tanks in the same place that are of similar capacity, so check this out as an option too.

my 40 is on duel fuel has a 60/65l tank mounted behind the diff
if i end on keeping it for a long time ill prolly raise the rear floor up and mount another tank underneath so that im left with 100l of useable gas and the same in petrol

can take a photo if you want

how many kms are you two getting out of your lpg alone. i just need a roughish indication. my 60lt petrol tank lets me do around 4km/lt! would i be improving ecconomy by double??

im getting around 250kays to a tank at a guess i really havnt mesured it yet tho im planing to next time i fill up thats all city driving no ofroad as yet with a stock 2f 4 speed

thats around 18bux worth of gas 55l or there abouts thats running the tank out then switching to petrol to get to the servo

Another idea...if i were to remove my petrol tank, under the front seats, will i be able to fit another 65lt tank in the same spot :?:

I'll take some photos for you this avo. Havnt payed too much attention to fuel economy figures but i've been spending less than half what i used to on petrol. What i do know is that it takes me the full gas tank (~65L) to get from perth to margs - just looked it up - 291km. Thats running the very thirsty 350 at 110-120km/hr in 5th (60 series box). At the moment i'm paying about $1 for petrol and 40c per litre for gas.
My conversion uses the sprintgas new generation mixer, some things to bear in mind are that gas mixtures need adjusting as your air filter develops more resistance ie becomes dirtier. also if you have a snorkel as i did this can cause problems as the gas kit that i had fitted won't work with ram air. on that point a recent article in modified 4wd monthly showed a 40 series on gas with a snorkel getting air from behind the glove compartment. if you are going to fit the tank behind the rear diff you also need to consider where the exhaust is going go.

I run a thirsty stroker mainly on gas...have always had a 90L tank underneath the rear...it was the biggest tank that would fit between the springs. Make sure that they mount your tank to the chassis as the old practice was to bolt it through the tub with a few plates...not very good long term.
I run twin shorkels into a custom offset round airbox that causes the air to swirl around the filter.

don't know the size of my tank, it'll take just over 70 ltres, so i guess probably 80 or 90 litre tank (was told about 10% don't fill or something) and 70 litres gets me just over 350 k's, stock 2f in a 40 with a 4 speed. and i don't drive too economically. it's mounted behind the diff like all the others posted, and runs dual fuel, but i never run it for more than 10 k's on petrol

i still haven't rigged up the snorkel to the gas ystem. i will attach some pics of how it used to be before the gas, as that's probably how it will end up. the carb is rochester with vacuum secondary's.

yeah the 90L is liquid capacity of the tank. the tanks only fill to 80% (unmodified)

I just picked up a gas system for my 40 for $300 :armsup:

It's got this frekin huge tank that will just fit in the back an oiler and a mixer that I can't rember the name off right now

I am hopeing to get it fitted next week and will post pic's and stuff then :armsup:
