I just got a 2 1/2" exhaust and extractors fitted on my gq shorty diesel and apart from the cool beasty sound i was pleasantly suprised by the extra acceleration and extra power i got :D . I was expecting some improvement but got more then i thought. Anyone else had it done and had different results or similar results to me??because i would highly recommend getting it done if you were thinking about it

I noticed a "noticeable" positive change when I did mine too.

To aid in the ever ending quest for more useable power/torque from the mighty TD42, I have removed the pre-cleaner box completely and replaced with a bit of 3" exhaust tubing that connects my (home made) snorkel and the original airbox. That makes a difference as the engine can breath alot better. To make up for that, I change the air filter every 5000kms when I do an oil, oil filters, and fuel filter (CAV) change.

It does sound good too doesn't it!!

Which brand of extractors did you get and what type of muffler?
I've been thinking about doing this for a while and from what I can gather Pacemakers seem to be as good as any?

Well mel - yes the brand makes two differences....one being the hole size difference in your pocket and the other is the performance....in my experience I have sold various types of straws and one thing avoid Motivater (Walker Exhausts). They are build to a price just like Sierra's. They look different but don't flow much better than a Toyota 2F std manifold. I "had" (in past life) a FJ40 :cry: with std headers...I then bolted on a set of Motivators to the second motor (2F) and noticed a little difference this is generally in the mind (you think you are going faster because your pushing it a lot harder) however they where removed off the third engine and then Pacemakers where available at the right price (Ex Repco employee) NOW your talking the 2F could actually fry both the 35's (with an open centre).......But after even putting extractors and an exhaust on the current GQ I drive :D - yeah a suttle difference but I should have waited a little longer till I had a full moment :idea: and decided to step up to the plate and buy a full turbo kit $8000 later and I will have too much power - always a good thing for someone that barely has a drivers licence!!! - GO TURBO :twisted: :twisted:

At that milage the 4.2 deisel should be just about run in! I put my turbo on at about that time and have run 12psi for the last four years with no problems. These big deisel's will go for a good 500,000 to 750,000 or more when well maintained so there is little to worry about — except for the hole in your wallet from buying the turbo!

If you do alot of towing and/or highway work fully loaded up, they're probably worth it. Ditto if you're doing comp work.

For me, I'd rather spend the $$ on gearmaster gear set, 6" lift, bigger, more aggressive tyres for offroad, aftermarket suspension components etc. I can live with the "slowness".

My Petrol 4.2 Datto goes a lot better since fitted the Pacemakers and 2.5" Press bend system, straight thru stainless muffler, revs out better and noticable pulling difference through the range, noise is good too.

Try doing it to a petrol running dual fuel and you starting with a carbie, you need the snorkel and the front mount intercooler too and even doing the work yourself the final dyno tune is going to leave my back pocket around $8000 poorer but then the right foot combined with the left & right arm in sync with the left foot gives me a new world of fun....its like buying you own arcade game - but this time the black lines (thats both for all you diesel drivers) are still there on the next lap!!!! :twisted:

Lukey extractors and 2.5" made a fair bit of difference to mine and at just under $600 is alot cheaper than fitting a turbo

It made fuck all difference bogged im just wanking myself silly over the really cool sound thats all.
Now without the sarcasim it did actually make a differance as it revs easier, is a bit more toey and sounds alot happier

Apologies for hijacking the thread, and excuse my ignorance Dirty Dave, but did you turbo a *carby* 4.2 petrol motor? I'd understand doing the efi motor, but wasn't the old blow-thru setup a pita?

Dunno whether its improved economy a great deal yet since im still getting over the fact that i can overtake cars without struggling and the fact that i can actually keep up with petrol cars and 4b's. I'll get over that soon enough though and settle back into my chug-a-long ways where hopefully it'll improve economy. [/quote]

I recall seeing this thread and forgot about replying to it.....

I recently bought yet another MQ Diesel Patrol with the 3.3lit SD33 motor in it. After some major repairs I had to replace the zorst system completely as much of it was totally unservicable.

I replaced the stock inch n 5/8 system with a 2.5 inch system and a "Walker Super Turbo" muffler, some of the pipe work came from my other rig which now sports a stainless system, and the muffler came from my old 1 tonner ute ( its still quite sound and realitivly in good condition).

The most amazing thing is the performance increase that I achived with such a simple mod, better ......
acceleration,
higher top speed,
ecconomy has increased,
easier starting,
much more responsive motor,
smoother idle,
lower oil consumption,
and a really excelent note to boot !

On the down side .......

engine braking isnt what it used to be at all, but thats what the brake pedel is for

I cant belive the differance between what it was and what it is now, its almost as if a new higher performance motor has been dropped in, it made that much of a differance.
The motor has done 305,000K's and its as if it has a new lease on life, I have also removed the pre filter and fitted a new air cleaner element, although at this stage I cant say that I have noticed any benifit from doing this ........ yet ;)

Now this is interesting.............haven't heard of loss of engine braking before with the larger exhaust.......
Is this common??
If I get the 3" turbo outlet and 3" exhaust to my TD-6 will I loose some of the engine braking?? It's pretty bad as it is with the 35's.

Yeah it supprised the hell outa me I can asure you, it is that noticable !

Headed of for a testrun so I could "hear" the new note .... arrived at the usual corner at the usual speed, lifted the foot and kept on going !!

Some double quick footwork on the brakes stopped me from a bit of an embarrasing moment.

I live on a hill and when I head off in the mornings I usually idle the patrol to the intersectionin 3rd, slip the clutch turn right and simply slip her straight into 4th gear and then I dont have to touch the throttle for about half k ....., and I sat nicely on the 60kph limit.....

Now I have to dab the brakes all the way down as all she wants to do is go go go go !!, If I dont touch the brakes, she runs out to 90 kph !!!

remember the only change has been the zorst !!!

your not going to increase wheel speed by dropping the gearing so your stoll not going to spin your wheels fast enough to clear them.
You also won't gain any momentum to attack hills etc.
The Turbo is a huge improvement to the TD42 off road .

I've been thinking about doing up the ehaust on my GU 3LTD, I've heard that there is a marked improvement in them also
