Rodeo Rear leaf lift

Post by Utemad »

For all the people that have raised their Rodeos or similar. How did you do the rear springs?

I was told by a Brsbane suspension place that you can put in an extra leaf either side and reset the original leafs to get up to 40 or 50mm of lift. But when I went there they said they didn't do non-standard stuff.

I can get Calmini extended shackles but don't want to as I already have greasable ARB ones standard length.

I don't particularly want the expense of a new leaf pack.

Anyone know where I can get the reset & extra leaf thing done?

Any suggestions?

86-89 jackaroos have a 6 leaf pack, (4 with 2 overloads) in my rodeo they gave about 2.5 inch of lift. they are stiff but i think this is due to the rodeos being very light in the back.
The jackaroos also have a 3 leaf pack, these are the same as rodeos. you can get them from most wrecking yards for about 100 bucks a pair.

To level it out i have 23mm ball joint spacers in the front and have fitted the thicker late v6 torsion bars and twisted them to make it stiffer.

some time over the next week i will be doing a 3inch body lift and plan to run 33's, if im lucky 35's. I have a 2wd rodeo.

LOL, mine was lowered and on 18's, rode like a POS, drove like a POS and i think it even looked like a POS but all the mini-truckers loved it. I pimped my shit (did that sound minitrucker?) like that for about 6 weeks, thought about lifting it, then looked into lifting it. ordered the parts and lifted. I hate the minitrucks too, unless it is a proper truck of the ford or chevy breed. :D

It now looks hell pimp on 18's and low profile tires, i have about 5 inch guard clearance at present and fitted the 35's up today, they rub on the back of the guard but i plan to do a 3inch body lift during the week to solve this. I still think i might be better or with 33's and am going to price up the 33x9.5 BFG mud. Althou i plan to use the car to travel to and from 4x4 events and around parks i might even look into the AT as i think they would wear better on the street. ( I have done 5000kms on my new motor which was fitted 6 weeks ago.)

Today i also fitted late hilux 2wd upper bump stops, they are 20mm lower than the rodeo ones which allowed me to get alittle more out of the torsion bars. I have about 25mm compression and most of the travel is in compression. beleieve it or not the car drives and handles alot better and when it was low. the upper bump stops are round and about the size of a 50c coin and about 15mm in depth, a nice flat disc.

It looked hell horny with the 35's on but one thing that did stand out to be a problem was the pissy little shocks in the front end and the fact that there is no steering stablizer. will also be looking into a heavy duty big bore shock.

Things are going pretty well, i have sold the 18's of it for 1100 bucks and thus far have only spent the deposit that i was paid for them. when i get the final payment i will buy new tyres and hopefully break even, i also plan to add a front light bar and spot lights as well as a rear spare wheel mount.

sorry for talking shit.

I am on the Southside. I'm actually going to Fulcrum Suspension today. Called them last week and they reckon they can do the lift but want to see the vehicle first. I intend to do the work myself but will price their labour too as if it isn't too much I can have the lift done earlier. As I won't have the time til September

Will also check out the Jackaroo springs option.

I'm going to put on 31x10.5 once the lift is done but only for off road.

I have the BFG A/T KO in the 225/75 16 size on it at the moment. Have done 50 000km on them with about 30 000km to go. They have been treated like absolute shit over all sorts of terrain and I've never had an issue with them.

I went Fulcrum. I had to sit around for 1 hour while they looked at the vehicle and then have them tell me stuff I told them I didn't want them to do (front lift) and then re-explain what I wanted them to do about 5 times but in the end I got the answer they could have given me over the phone. Which is "yes we can lift the rear 50mm".

Oh well at least I have found someone who can do the work.

Now I just have to look at those Jack leafs and then wait until September to do the work myself.

I agree about the mini-trucks too. They look stoopid. They must have a load rating of about 50kg when they're lowered lol.

Thanks for the help guys.

I meant I only want them to do the rear lift. I will do the ball joint flip, spacer and wind the bars myself.

The rear lift entails a reset and another leaf for 50mm.

$242 if I remove and refit. (I will do it myself).

$400 if they do remove and refit.

Plus new u-bolts and flexible brake line if necessary.

Might also need new rear shocks depending on their length.

thats not too bad, i swapped my rear springs into my truck in about an hour. it is easy with a hoist and axle diff stands.

Did you price a new set of aftermarket leaves through a company like kings?

I was at burning customs tonight and they have a big deal that will be in next months street machine, 50mm lift springs for $209 a pair, i know they were to suit a toyota and a navara but i think he said something about getting them for the rodeos aswell.

I would look new ones if it isnt to much more.

i still dont understand why spring shops aliways add a leaf on a reset i think its to cover themselves if they sag abit but all reset spring sag over time you would be surprised what one leaf in or out does to a pack 209 from burnin sound good to :D

All the new 50mm lift leaf packs were around the $530 that I have seen.

I have been told that the extra leaf is to prevent sag. The ones I have seen without the extra leaf have sagged pretty quick on 4x4's. Probably due to being pushed from either extreme up and down too often. They said they won't sag with the extra leaf. So long as it lasts 2 years I will be happy. As I will be selling it around that time.

I would be very interested in Burnin Customs leafs if they are $209. Or is that each?

Is there any way with the rodeos to put he leaf springs over the axles
This i reckon would be the best lift as it gets the shock mounts out of the way of deep ruts

Welcome Nico! Good to have another one drop in from the other OL.

Here's a write up/how to for a spring over axle lift (SOA) from 4x4wire. This shows it being done to a 1st gen Jack but should be easily adaptable to the Rodeo.

You can get spring over axle mod kits. Will lift your Rodeo the diameter of your axle tube and width of spring pack. Apparently about 4 inches. This creates a problem with the front suspension though as Calmini only does a 3 inch.

Thanks for the info was just asking if anyone had heard\done this more than wanting to do it as they seem to hang low
Ute mad
You said that you want to fit 31\15's onto the ute after lift
Have you thougth about 235\85 16 (32In) these fit on the standard rims and is what I am going to when the yokies wear thin

Yeah I thought of that with the 235/85. I have seen them too. However I have already got the 31x15. Bit of a deal through work so I didn't argue. This way I can fit MT/Rs when the existing 31s wear out and have my standard 225/75 16 BFG KOs for street or just if the DOT says to take the 31s off.

Hey Nick,

Stopped in at a wrecker today and got a pair of leafs from a 86-89 Jackaroo. Can't remember which year exactly. It's a 5 leaf pack which from my observation should do about a 2in lift. I didn't realise Jacks had such short shackles!

$100 for the pair.

Thanks for the tip.

Yeah will let you know. I won't be using the Jack shackles. Have OME greasables.

Hopefully will be doing the lift in about 2 weeks. Work dependent.

the thing i think i forgot to tell you, you need the u-bolts as the rodeo ones are to short with the thicker leaves.

Yeah I figured that. However the ones on this Jack looked all rusty and the thread was crappy looking. I will get some longer new ones.

I did the rear lift this morning. However the springs I got didn't work out the way I had planned. I'm not too sure what happened but the 50mm lift that I had anticipated only worked out to be about 10mm once it had settled in a bit.

I measured everything before hand on various vehicles but it didn't work out in the end. Only cost $80 though so no real harm done. Might be able to sell them one day???????? oh well.

really? ring the wrecker that they came from and tell them that they are no better than the ones you have now and they should give you a refund.

maybe they too were sagged to the ass.
