HJ60 alternator capacity

Post by glenxr650 »

I have an '83 HJ60. What is the max. alternator amps? I have heared of 35 and 50 amp alternators. (50 amp in later model HJ60s). Are they a direct swap?
I wired up some spotties and checked the voltage at the battery at 3000rpm and found it was only about 12.8V (new battery by the way). I have a second battery set up so it is only charging when the alternator pumps out more that 13.5V. The problem is it doesn't cut in when the spotties are on. I've put new brushes in the alternator also.

Try adjusting the regulator. HJ60's have an external alternator, i adjusted mine as i was having the same problems that you have and it fixed it right up.

it should be good for much more than 50amps. Having said that, a 100amp alternator does not mean that it is capable of pumping out 100amps with a permanent duty cycle at 14.5 volts.

It just means that it should be capable of outputing voltage higher than that of the cell capability of the battery. e.g. At 100 amps it may only output 12.1 volts.

Your reg may be on its way out which is not an uncommon problem.
Sambo, I would be interested in finding out your adjustment process for the reg. Sounds interesting.
