gq alternator upgrade

Can someone tell me a cheap conversion to upgrade the alternator on my gq as the original is only 50amp, it's a petrol by the way.

Dude, go to a trusted Auto sparky, he can gut the internals of your stock Alternator and Ramp it up, that way there's no messing about, or resizing etc, shop around if your not happy with the price.

I have a 55A Bosch from 80's Commododore, pretty easy fit with some grinding of the bracket and using the pulleys off the Jap one.

Try www.aea.com.au They sell alt's to suit both Petrol and diesel.

There is a diesel one there that is 110amps and has a vac pump on the back, price I think some one said was about $350 (thats nearly cheaper than getting the old crap thing rebuilt).

$50 vs $300, availability nearly anywhere.

Runs my 1700w inverter just fine, what are you running to require so many amps?

I do have 3x 17 plate batteries as well though.

Are you guys suggesting 55A is a worthwhile alternator upgrade? That's a pathetic current output, especially on a vehicle with any demanding accessories like a winch and lotsa lights...

Or have I misunderstood? Mine's got a 75A alternator, I assume it's a retrofit (or a Maverick thing??) but it looks like it was bolted in easy, and the 75A is on the sticker so it's not like the innards have been altered.

Well a winch could require a big amp alternator I suppose, and as far as lighting goes it depends on how often / how long you have all 500w to 2000w or so lit. When I had all 3 batteries permanently linked I once left my head lights on low beam when I got to work at 6.30am and started the car fine at 5.30pm.
Winching Comps etc high ampage would be a must of course, some of these guys run 4 or more batteries too.

I guess I am a bit of a fan of beefy alternators; I like to switch everything on and not see a voltage drop... all the lights, fan on 4, stereo and amp, massaging driver's seat...

I was really disappointed when I saw mine was only 75A; I'd have had a little sook if it had been 55.
