second hand 6" lift is in

NISSAN GQ LIFT

As many of you are aware, I recently purchased my 1990 GQ with TD42 and DTS turbo. When I purchased it, it had been installed with what I was told was a 2” coil lift (unsure on fronts, OME heavy duty rears) and a 2” body lift. Everything else on the car was stock, or close to.

About 1 month after I bought the car, I found a second hand lift kit that I bought. I was told that it was out of a GU s1 and that it would all fit on, with the possible exception of the internal sizes of the panhard rod bushes.

After many enquires, I decided to install the kit on Friday (the 13th, should have known…). As far as I knew, the only additional bit I needed were the extended brake lines.

I dropped the car off at 9am and it was still not completed by 5pm. It looks like I was either duped on the deal or my homework was incomplete. After more than a dozen phonecalls, I have to thank CHEEZY, Deano from CLIMAX (Newcastle), Locky @ BIG BALLS and Nick from MANNELLS. I picked up the car at 8am on Saturday morning and headed to Mannells. Very slowly. They are my closest professionals from the Central Coast. Matthew looked at my car and told me exactly what I needed to get it working.

I was told by the guy that I bought the gear off that his old truck was a 1999 Nissan Patrol GU s1 3 litre turbo diesel. It looks like I was supplied the following:

6” Dobinsons rear coils
6” Kings front coils
Rancho RS9000 x 4
4way steering damper (3 litre won’t fit a 1990 GQ)
GU2 front adjustable panhard rod (won’t fit 1990 GQ)
GU1 rear adjustable panhard rod (fits)
GU Rear panhard dropdown bracket (won’t fit 1990 GQ)
7 degree castor plates (there’s a whole other story there)

The local guys fitted the 4 coils, 4 shocks and the rear panhard but could not fit the front panhard, the castor plates or the steering damper.

On getting to Mannells on Saturday morning, I spoke to Matthew and bought a new front panhard bar (the GU2 bar has larger bushes and won’t fit in the mounting brackets on a 1990 GQ). The steering damper from a 3 litre GU s1 has a pin on one end and eye the other. My 1990 GQ has a pin on both ends.

I have no idea why the other guy had the drop down bracket fitted, but I am running without it and it’s not too bad.

The bottom line is that I thought that this info might help anyone out there in the future and be able to identify possible problems with second hand gear they are buying.

I have put some pics in the trips section under Watagans sat 14th, but here is one just for laughs. There are also some parts that I don’t need for sale now… look in the appropriate section!

After install of the lift, it is now 760 rear 740 front ride height. Measured from the centre of the hub to the outside lip of the standard flares (lower than the height of the metal on the actual body of the car). Also, can I please have some measurements of a standard height GQ for comparison. I have no idea what lift I now have, as it looks more like 8” to me. Ideas anyone?

Yeah, I'd love to head in that direction, but the highway km that I do in the thing are puttin me off due to being cheaper to run 33s. I might get a spare set if I sell the XR6 Turbo sometime soon.
