Why Does my Rangie crank over with the ignition ON?
My 86efi rangie has just started cranking over when the ignition is in the ON position. I can pull it into gear to stop it from cranking but if i put it back in park or neutral it starts cranking again.
Now it only does this ocasionaly not constantly. When it does this the Brake warning light also comes on and stays on which i think is normal when you turn the key to start but it also tells me when this problem is present before i put the auto back in park.
As far as i know the ignition switch has not long been replaced by Britswed before i bought it but im not sure if the Micro switch on the ignition was also replaced.
Hoping that someone else has had this problem and knows something about it.

On a slightly different thread, if my Rangie stalls etc, I can never just crank it over! I've got to turn if off completly and turn it on again. Kind of sucks offroad as you run the risk of locking the steering etc while moving.

Every Euro car I've ever driven has done this.

Check the relay under the plastic cover pas side under bonnet, I believe the starter realy is there.
Other option is the solinoid on the starter.

Someone else also suggested this. You dont know which one it is by any chance do you?
Shouldnt be the Starter as its not very old.

Ok,
according to my red haynes manual ... if you pop plastic cover off the engine bay relays then you should see 7 relays all lined up together.
from left to right these are
1. Aircon Fan relay
2. aircon relay
3. compressor clutch relay
4. Fan relay
5. Starter solinoid relay
6. Heater rear window relay
7. Brake failure warning check relay.
Now there is a timer on the far right that should be for the headlamp washer delay/timer which you mightn't have.
As for the relays in the kick panels, Drivers side as far as I can tell they should be (left to right) sunroof, aux lamp, flasher/hazard,
and if you have relays in the passanger side that would mean you have less relays in the engine compartment as they appear to be nearly all the same (aircon/heater, compressor, aircon load, condenser fan, aircon diode)
I can scan the pages tomorrow if you like
