It is a pretty tough event. Based on OBC... teams have to be self sufficient for two nights. Get the word out Cheezy, and everyone else..... we want to get some more competitors for next year.Cheezy4x4 wrote:Looks tuff, BTW nice bar on the yellow tray.

A very big thank you has to go to both Rob Clark and Andy McCabe. They put together a fantastic event, even though Shane and I only got to complete 3 1/2 stages. As an event organisor myself, I understand how difficult it is to make an event run smoothly. I couldn't fault the G.C 2000 on organisation. Well done Rob and Andy.
I had my crash course on GPS at ARB Gold Coast about 60 seconds after we were handed our sheet of co-ordinates to find. As a result, we were second last car away from the start line. I must have got the hang of it pretty quick, as we were the first car into the finish line about 20 minutes ahead of Steve Currell in the 60 series ute. We were in a six-way tie for first place on SS1.
Saturday morning, we were split into groups and set off for our first stage. We drew the deep water first up. Not the best thing at 6:30am, when it's about -3 degrees!! Fortunately, we drove the water section of the stage without any dramas. Only made DNF by 30 seconds, but we were happy, as we were the only car in our group to make it under DNF. Our second stage was an ugly rock gully drive requiring a driver/nav swap at the top. We timed out on this stage unfortunately. I had a nice heart-starter when I picked up a rock to fill a hole, and woke up about a 4 foot brown snake. I went from struggling to pick up a rock of that size, to running with the f#*king thing!!!! Everybody in our group either DNF'd or broke in this stage. John Butler had a gentle little rollover about 40 meters from the finish box. Paul Staib busted a tyre, bent the rim badly, and snapped a tie rod end in about the same place that John rolled. Had to feel sorry for the boys, they were looking like finishing in time.
Our third stage was where it all came undone for us. Left the start box, dropped into the creek, drove up the creek, and tried to climb the exit embankment. Didn't make it, so out got the winch bitch (yours truly). Couldn't get it on a single line pull, so we had to hook up a double line pull. Still couldn't budge the poor Toot, and unfortunately we stripped the brake shaft inside the winch. We called DNF, and got pulled out. Fixed the winch, but then discovered that we must have hit the water too hard, and the fan had eaten the radiator. Very dissapointed, but decided to call it a day as Shane is doing Metcalfe's 8-day winch challenge and didn't want to do any more damage.
So, I spectated for the rest of the weekend, but still had a blast.
Once again, thanks Rob and Andy. And, a big thank you to the Gold Coast 4WD Club for putting on a sensational event. We'll be back next year.
P.S - Awesome pics X-Factor. You must have been quick to get the ones of me and Shane. We weren't in the comp for very long. Thanks mate.

We had a great time too.
Took us a while on SS1 to get around the place but made it to the property in the end on Friday night and had a very cold night in the swag.
We were the first to go in SS2 winching twice through the course before breaking a CV on the last hill, and winching into the finish gate 20 seconds over the DNF.
After changing the CV we went off to our next stage (SS6) which was first aid where we struggled through.
SS8 was a fairly easy stage with a short downhill into a gully , a few rocks to negotiate and then a full noise climb up to the finish gate. On the way to SS5 we picked up a stick which wedged in the side step and dented the drivers sill pretty badly which was disappointing.
SS5 was a great stage with a little bit of mud to start then a fast run up and round a few gentle but long hills before a steep climb and through to the finish. We had to winch on the steep climb and struggled to keep it on line but eventually got up and made it inside DNF.
SS3 started with a backward winch down (what felt like) a near vertical face before weeaving in and out of the creek with some reasonably nasty drop offs and a deep water finish. We really felt the size of the Patrol on this stage where we couldn't make any of the turns in and out without a few goes and DNF's before the deep water with a load of penalties.
SS4 was our last for the day and was a tight rocky gully with a driver change, hill climb, driver change and back down. We hit the DNF time at the half way mark and since nobody else had made the DNF up to then we carried on. Even trying the Driving Miss Daisy approach we took out nearly every peg on the course and got about 20 penalties :(
Saturday night was another GPS nav run. We were really struggling on this one and kept running in to Rod & Julie coming the other way who we kept blinding and running off the track - sorry guys, we didn't know what we were supposed to be doing, where we were going, or which switch did what.
Sunday we handed in our mapping answers (SS14) and started the day with a bush knowledge quiz (SS10)where we did well enough to win - don't know how!
Then as other stages were going slow we jumped the queue and did SS 9 which was a rerun ofv the first half of SS2 followed by some rocky bits and a couple of mud runs and slalom. We were really pleased to drive the whole stage without winching (although Dave got out to set up the straps in advance 'cos we thought we would have to) and this was probably our best stage
SS11 was a drop in to water, creek run, winch hill driver change, downhill and then wheel swap with 1 jack. I got a bit carried away on this one and burnt the clutch badly slipping it while winching up the hill then we stuffed around changing the tyre for ages and missed the DNF by about 20 minutes!
Last up was SS10, a rocky creek bed with a ledge to climb the end of. We ended up winching 3 times in here , bird nested the winch and jammed it as well as bending the bullbar and front guard. And missed the DNF by about 15 minutes!
Overall we had a fantastic time apart from the cold cold nights! We learnt a lot and were continually impressed by the setup and skills of the other drivers and navvy's.
Event was great and well organised - sincere thanks to Rob, Andy and all those whoc gave their time, money and effort to make it happen.

Yeah, we were really dissapointed to have to pull out. But, that's racing I guess. It can be cruel. Just means it can't get any worse next year!!
I didn't actually get a chance to see your stage on saturday as Shane had taken the car home to see if he could repair it, so I was only on foot. Too bloody lazy to walk there, so I just sat on SS2 giving Pete Sternbeck a hand fixing broken bunting and pegs. I felt sorry for him trying to do it with a broken collarbone.
We'll definately have another crack next year. Hopefully I'm a bit better with the GPS by then, and a bit trimmer so I can mountain goat up the hills with the cable better!!

Yeah, swag was a little frosted on both mornings. Sunday morning it thawed out pretty quick, after they dragged me (while asleep) halfway through the camp ground and parked me underneath Peter Lepherd's exhaust pipe!!
