new member, questions on my 350 SWB Mq Patrol
new member, questions on my 350 SWB Mq Patrol
G'day Fellas
I was cruizin the net when I found this site, I have to say, there is so much information on here, its excellent...
My story is, I brought a 350 chev powered Mq Patrol, its a little rough although it has some good gear in it, but after seeing others for sale on this website, I probly paid 1-2k to much, but shit, you get that....
My biggest piss off with this car, is the Diff ratio, i beleive I have 4.6's in at the moment, It dose about 3200 rpm at 100 n a bit, somewhere round there....Ohh and not to MENTION THE NOISE FROM THE DIFF... Jezz man, how are they so bloody NOISEY!!!!!
What I need I think, is the P40 Diffs, wich are either 3.9's or 3.3's can any body help with that one, cheap but, lol.....
I know I can put 35's on it, but that is going to require lift kits, etc etc, not something I realy wanted to takle...and the tyres are brand new too!!! 31's duelers...
The other is a 5 speed converstion, thanks to Kingie's posts in the conversion, I really could'nt be bothered doing that one either, lol... Only due to an injury, busted neck, im now wondering why I brought a SWB. lol...
The thing is, it will tow great, its a shitter so dont have to worry a bout knocks, etc etc, we can load the 2 kids and go out bush, well thats untill summer when the thing will probly OVER HEAT!!! did I mention it would tow great ....
Mods on the way..
I gotta change the rear side windows with something that dosent rattle, also the rear window rattles, I meen its the middle of winter and I want to take the hard top off cause I get so pissed off with the rattling....
the other is sound deaden the whole car, add MDF panels and carpet etc to the inside, along with some 6.5 splits, also re fit the 6x9's that way I can hear clearly what is being played.
These MQ's are dead set noisey rattly uncumfy shit boxes.. and Im really stuffed as to why I love it so MUCH!!!
I have to re do the radiator outlets, whoever done the conversion needs shooting, theres pipes and crap running every where, if they swapped top and bottom hoses to the oppisite side, all would be fine....
Well that better do for the time being as I could write here all night.. I'll be around these pages for a while now, as you all sound like very good blokes with a wealth of knowlage, Kingie that was a great post on your MQ, thanks for that..
All the best

Sounds like an OK rig,
Ive got the 308 under mine, looking to upgrade to a Chev at some stage in the distant future, ( prob when this motor goes bang!! )
if u go down to 3.9's or 3.3's you will not be able to crawl anything close to as slow as your low range is now, u will move faster, and towing will be reduced as well......... Or at least more clutch wear
welcome to the gang

Fit a 5 spd box .... all problems solved
The rear window rattles because the rubber between the canopy and the body has compressed over the years. A simple solution is to add a thin slither of rubber from say a tyre tube to lift the canopy back up, this also helps with shutting the rear window.kc_ksom wrote:Mods on the way..

paint on sound deadner helps as does a good underlay and carpet. Also look at stuffing a couple of home type Insulation "Pink" bats into the panel cavities ... IE: rear quarters !kc_ksom wrote:the other is sound deaden the whole car, add MDF panels and carpet etc to the inside, along with some 6.5 splits, also re fit the 6x9's that way I can hear clearly what is being played.

You'll find a Ford Falcon bottom radiator hose fits up perfectly to the chev water pump and the radiator hunt through the stock at the local autobarn shop......kc_ksom wrote:I have to re do the radiator outlets, whoever done the conversion needs shooting, theres pipes and crap running every where, if they swapped top and bottom hoses to the oppisite side, all would be fine....

G'day Screwy
The reason for the 3.3 or 3.9 only has to do with Hwy speed, I don't do any comp things, and it dosen't require low range unless im stuck in a bog with my boat on.
As for the clutch, I think all my gear with boat on, and kids, etc etc, shouldnt go over the 1.5 tnn mark (towing), may sneak over on the holidays as everything will be in the boat, but for the majority, it will be pretty light.
I brought this old jigger for the purpose of going fishing, as My main drive car has HSV bumpers and is very low, the last time i took my son to the river to go for a moto x ride (only wish i could do it with him) I ended up doing $1500 damage to the front- rear - and 1 side of the skirts, this was caused from a puddle that was 30cm wide, BUT IM SURE IT WAS 1ft DEEP!!!!
From that I started looking for an old jigger, and the MQ SWB fits that bill...
I only wished I seen this site before hand as there are some good rigs for sale here, a little cheaper than I paid. But at the end of the day, it has everything I need, and it was still pretty cheap for a 2nd car, and so many people look at it with a funny face when I start it, lol... W T F's IN THAT... lol,,, Im sure the bonnet scoop and bowtie emblem gives it away...I dought I should have much trouble selling it if need be.
Catch ya

I meant if that is rough, mine must be a pile of scrap metal!!

LoL fellas
Its still an old shitter, but I spose its not too bad!!! (from a distance )
the inside will get a full going over, will be done very soon.
I now have a gas research system to bolt on, so will have to see how that goes.
I think she needs a new set of lifters, so while i do them I think I'll give it a VERY LUMPY CAM
I need a new master and slave cylinder for the clutch as it leaks down, maybe a hone and kit will do...
I have a bit of rust on top of the left hand rear wheel arch, some surface rust elsewhere, and a ding to repair, after all that, I think it will be realy good.
Thanks fellas..
Casey.

you can buy a new master cylinder from repco for $65 maybe even cheaper , i got one about a year ago. Slave cylinder should be cheap as well.
Make sure you have the rubber boot above the clutch arm / fork as that is where mud gets in. Cost $16 from NISSAN, I went through 2 starters at $220 each B4 figuring out that i didn't have the rubber boot at all

With regards to the Clutch master and slave,
Buying 2 brand new ones is buy far much smarter than putting a kit through them. You will be thankful u did it and the money isnt that much more expensive.

I do have a pair of them spare, The master Cylender is good. The slave rooted, ( needs a kit ) but it wont fit you car anyway.
There are a coupla slight variations between the clutch slave cylender on the various petrols and various desiels of the age.
The master is the same, right the way through though.
Dont get reco or second hand slave, just get a new one. They arnt that dear and u will have something u know will last and has warrantee on it.
I can get u the master if u like.
But once again, new is better than second hand.
I had a rooted slave so i put a new pair in.
You will also need to know the motor that was originally in it before the chev for repco to give ya the right slave that will fit properly.
Petrol or desiel? basically.

standard should fit the bellhousing, both kingy and i have used the standard ones. Just have to modify the rod coming out of the slave that pushed on the clutch fork
